The purpose of this study is to develop a software education program using a coding robot and to verify whether applying this to a field has an effect on promoting young children’s computational thinking and playfulness. The following are the research problems that were established according to this objective. Research problem 1. What about the composition of the software education program for young children using a coding robot to improve young children’s computational thinking and playfulness? Research problem 2. What about the effect of tthe software education program for young children using a coding robot to enhance young children’s computational thinking and playfulness? Summarizing the conclusions based on the results and discussions of this study, they are as follows. The software education program for young children using a coding robot to promote young children’s computational thinking and playfulness was developed with educational objective & goal, contents, teaching·learning, evaluation system. The aim of the program is to cultivate creative and convergent talents with the computing thinking skills. The specific goals to achieve this were set to include ‘understanding the basic principle of software,’ ‘developing the computing thinking skills in the process of creatively solving a problem with curiosity,’ ‘promoting playfulness in the process of cooperatively solving a problem,’ ‘participating voluntarily in software education activities using a coding robot.’ The contents of the program were selected focusing on the core contents in ‘exploring a coding robot(understanding a coding robot),’ ‘recognizing a problem(problem decomposition),’ ‘connecting it with prior experience(pattern recognition),’ ‘planning the order of problem solving(algorism),’ ‘deciding on how to solve a problem(conciseness),’ ‘finding a way to improve(debugging).’ The details that will need to be addressed at the developmental level of young children were suggested together. Teaching and learning were formed by being divided into a teaching·learning stage, a teaching strategy, a teacher role. The teaching·learning stage was set to be ‘play→modification→recomposition.’ The learning experience that is performed at each stage were specifically presented. The teaching strategy was set to include creating an environment and atmosphere, attracting participation, offering, demonstrating and imitating, encouraging, scaffolding. The teacher role was set to include an environmental constructor, a play observer, a play presenter, an interactor, an evaluator, an emotional supporter. It was allowed to possibly back up the play of young children in the teaching and learning stage and perform a smooth teaching strategy. Evaluation was sorted into the early childhood assessment and the teacher evaluation. The early childhood assessment was allowed to be made on the basis of the self-evaluation after playing and of the teacher’s infant observation data and play-process record materials(an observation note, a play recording paper, a play output). The teacher evaluation was allowed to be made on the basis of the play-process record materials and of the self-evaluation through reflective journals. Second, in consequence of applying the software education program for young children using a coding robot to improve young children’s computational thinking and playfulness, it was inspected to have effectiveness on enhancing young children’s computational thinking and playfulness. Through the software education program to increase young children’s computational thinking and playfulness that was developed in this study, young children had the experience of understanding the function of a coding robot and of exploring the basic principle of software in the process of modifying and reorganizing a play through reflecting young children’s interest and curiosity. Young children experienced the process of computational thinking skills in problem decomposition, pattern recognition, algorism, abbreviation, debugging in the process of seeking for a problem-solving method mediated by the coding robot and showed the play aspect of being enhanced the social reciprocity, the cognitive flexibility, the enjoyment expressiveness, the humor conception, and the leading immersion in the process of interacting with a coding robot and a peer. Synthesizing the above findings, the software education program to increase young children’s computational thinking and playfulness that was developed in this study is suggestive of contributing to promoting computational thinking, which is the ultimate goal of software education, and to restoring young children’s playfulness, which is emphasized in the revised Nuri curriculum, and of having an educational value along with the empirical research outcome of software education for young children that can be effectively used in the early childhood education field.
