This study aims to develop a teaching method for Concrete Music creation utilizing blended learning and evaluate its suitability for an actual classroom. In order to develop this teaching method, blended learning theory was studied and 10 different middle school Music II textbooks(2015 revised edition) were analyzed. The characteristics of each online and offline classes were reflected when designing the content of the class. The class included mobile application utilization to improve students’ participation and group activity to encourage cooperative learning. The site compatibility was assessed by 3 teachers on field. The conclusion of this study is as follows: First of all, although the learning site had to be changed for each class, there was no difficulty with applying the blended learning model to music class to keep the continuity of learning and conduct group creation activities. Also, it was evaluated through the site compatibility assessment that it was well-designed to reflect the benefits of each online and offline class. Abundant learning materials were provided to prevent demotivation derived from online learning and various activities were involved to boost students' active participation during the class. By having students upload their worksheet or tasks on an online board, each student’s learning level could be checked and any loss in learning was prevented with feedback and additional lessons. During offline classes, check-in & supplement on previous online classes were added and advanced activities such as creation, debate and presentation and instant feedback were provided. However, one of the site compatibility assessment results indicated that there might not be enough time for all the activities suggested by the blended learning model. This implied that either the number of activities should be reduced or the time for each activity should be more thoroughly distributed. Secondly, the experiment of utilizing smart application as a mean of Concrete Music creation proved that a mobile application is an effective tool for blended learning music class and helps students easily experience creation activity. This was because the application was very easy to use as users can change sounds just by clicking some buttons and it enabled both individual and cooperative creation. Still, as each student was on a different level of familiarity with the tool and for some it might be still hard to use, the experiment suggested it to be applied step by step. The assessment results also indicated that more time needs to be assigned on learning how to use the application and various solutions should be prepared in advance to deal with unexpected situations while using the application. Lastly, the necessity of including various composing method was found while designing teaching-learning method and assessing the site compatibility, considering each student’s different level of understanding in music and enthusiasm. The lecture consisted of several activities such as rolling dice and running roulette to vary the sound according to the probabilistic result and complete a music piece, based on the composition method of Chance Music. One of the method of Chance Music’s advantages is that there is no pressure of creation and it gives chances for music pieces to evolve into a new, unexpected way. Yet, for those students who are more enthusiastic about creation, such characteristics might play as an obstacle in their creation activity and their intention as a creator would not be reflected enough in their piece. Thus, following study should be conducted to provide diverse and liberal creation activity, with more class sessions and various composing methods, such as Chance Music, Electronic Music, Minimal Music. Through this study, I hope that middle school 3rd graders get to experience the wide category of music by utilizing every sound from daily life as good ingredients for their creation, and find interest and become more enthusiastic in contemporary music and creation activity. Also, I hope classes that contemporary music are covered long-term, rather than a one-time class in the field education.
