The purpose of this study was to develop the Finding Meaning in Life Program targeting elderly who live alone and evaluate its effectiveness in order to improve their mental health as they’re vulnerable social group in terms of psychology. The program was developed in accordance with the development model of counseling and psycho-educational program based on logotherapy by Viktor E. Frankl. In Step 1, the literature review and interview with elderly living alone were conducted to set program objective and examine the participants’ demand. Then, the objectives were established by session depending on key elements found. In Step 2, the pilot interview was carried out with head of organizations and mental health nurses to set up the program strategy. In Step 3, the pilot study and expert evaluation were carried out to come up with Finding Meaning in Life Program in 8 sessions. In last stage, Step 4, the program was applied to participants. To evaluate effectiveness of the program, Nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was adopted. The participants of this study were elderly living alone aged over 65 who were recruited for the research based on the selection criteria and final participants were as follows: 16 participants in experimental group and another 17 in control group. Experimental group was given Finding Meaning in Life Program in 8 sessions twice a week, while the control group was presented hypertension management leaflet and then, pre-test, post-test and follow-up evaluation afterwards. Using IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0, data was analyzed with Repeated Measures ANOVA. Research findings were as follows. The experimental group who participated in the Finding Meaning in Life Program had significant difference, compared to the control group; Meaning in Life(F=23.713, p<.001), Depression(F=15.948, p=.007), Self-Esteem(F=17.538, p<.001), Ego-Integrity(F=7.756, p=.002), and Life Satisfaction(F=11.548, p<.001), which all showed huge effect size. In comparison with evaluation through follow up-test, it turned out that experimental group maintained improvement in Meaning in Life(t=-5.926, p<.001), Self-Esteem(t=-2.966, p=.010), Ego-Integrity(t=-2.909, p=.011), and Life Satisfaction(t=-2.985, p=.009) for 4 weeks after the end of the program. However, the decrease in Depression did not continue for 4 weeks after the end of the program (t=-2.004, p=.064). To sum up, the research findings indicated that Logotherapy-based Finding Meaning in Life Program decreased Depression of elderly living alone and had constant positive impact on improvement in Meaning in Life, Self-Esteem, Ego-Integrity, and Life Satisfaction. Therefore, it’s expected to see this program could be utilized as effective way for nursing intervention to help elderly who live alone to improve the meaning of life and boost mental health.
