Aim : This study analyzed online class situations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic (COVID-19) and prior face-to-face class situations based on the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model. The purpose was to explore suitable physical education class (PEC) designs for the “new normal” to come in the post-corona era.
Methods : Educators and learners with experience in PEC at universities before and after COVID-19 were recruited through social networking services. That is, the subjects of this study consisted of only those who conducted face-to-face classes in the 2019 fall semester and online classes in the 2020 spring semester. The sample size for the study was constructed based on the G*power 3.1.9.7 program, and the biased sampling method among non-probability sampling methods was used for group selection. Finally, 133 learners and 36 instructors were selected as subjects. This study used a retrospective cross-sectional design that added qualitative interview data based on the quantitative study. Upon receiving approval by the Institutional Review Board, questionnaires were distributed and collected from March 10 to May 30, 2020. The questionnaire was used by applying the class model of ADDIE, which consists of 5 domains (analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation) and 13 sub-items for instruction. Recognizing that design, the second stage, is important during COVID-19, analysis, development, execution, and evaluation for classes were set as independent variables, and class design was set as a dependent variable. The reliability of the questionnaire distributed to educators before and during COVID-19 was 0.945 and 0.946, respectively, while the reliability of the questionnaire distributed to learners was 0.814 and 0.920, respectively. The analysis methods used to solve the eight hypotheses established in this study were descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, reliability analysis, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed rank test, Spearman correlation analysis, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. All analyses were tested at the significance level p ≤ 0.05. Additional qualitative interview data were analyzed by conducting an open-ended questionnaire and interview in relation to the variables of the ADDIE model.
Results : First, when conducting offline classes before COVID-19, the educator conducted face-to-face PEC as planned, whereas online media were hardly used. In the case of the learner, during the PEC in the face-to-face class environment, the interaction with the educator was satisfactory and the class was conducted efficiently overall, but it was found that there was little experience of taking the class using online media. Second, when conducting online classes during COVID-19, it was judged that while the educators gave better advance notice of classes during online classes compared to face-to-face classes, the learner's practical ability did not improve compared to face-to-face classes. For online classes, it was judged that the learner received good instruction using online media, but the practical skill of PEC did not improve compared to face-to-face classes. Third, in the comparative analysis of classes before and during COVID-19, it was found that the educators conducted classes more effectively in a face-to-face environment than online. In the case of learners, it was found that they engaged more actively in face-to-face classes than in online classes. Fourth, learners' attitudes toward classes before COVID-19 were significantly higher than that of educators. On the other hand, the educators showed a higher level than the learners in online classes, although it was not significant. Fifth, in the correlation analysis between class variables of educators before COVID-19, class design showed a positive correlation with development (rho = 0.625), implementation (rho = 0.552), and evaluation (rho = 0.617). Even in online classes during COVID-19, class design showed a positive correlation with development (rho = 0.622), implementation (rho = 0.693), and evaluation (rho = 0.678). Sixth, class design showed a positive correlation with development (rho = 0.693), implementation (rho = 0.770), and evaluation (rho = 0.778) in learners' classes before COVID-19. In the learner's class during COVID-19, class design showed a positive correlation with development (rho = 0.753), implementation (rho = 0.681), and evaluation (rho = 0.697). These results showed that class variables showed a higher relevance when online classes had to be conducted compared to class design in the offline era. Seventh, the analysis, development, implementation, and evaluation of the educator's classes before COVID-19 did not have a significant effect on class design. On the other hand, analysis, development, implementation, and evaluation for learners significantly influenced class design. In other words, it was found that analysis’ had the greatest influence on class design for learners during the face-to-face semester, and ‘development’ and ‘execution’ sequentially had a significant effect. Eighth, when analyzing the effects of analysis, development, implementation, and evaluation by educators on class design after COVID-19, the 'analysis' process acted as the most important factor in the impact on online class design. On the other hand, it was found that 'analysis' and 'development' processes were the most important factors in class design for learners during the online semester.
Conclusion : Summarizing the results of this study, it was found that physical education classes affected not only educators, but also learners due to COVID-19, and that the class design had a considerable influence on the formation of PEC. To prepare for the new normal in the post-corona era, where online and offline classes are expected to take place in parallel, it is important to understand the differences between online and offline classes to design better classes. Furthermore, continued research is suggested to improve teaching effectiveness, class environment, and teaching methods by utilizing new and developing technologies, such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and metaverse for non-face-to-face situations.
