Recently miniturization of electronic devices have required related materials and circuit boards to be lighter and thinner, as such flexible printed circuit boards (FPCBs) which are main components for mobile devices have increased demand to reduce the overall thickness while maintaining the mechanical and electrical performance. FPCBs consist of polyimide (PI) substrate, Cu pattern and coverlay to protect the circuit. Conventional coverlay includes PI film and adhesive layer, which has the disadvantage of deficient integration. Many studies on poly(amide-imide) (PAI) have been conducted since PI is unsuitable to be used in a liquid type due to its low solubility. In order to improve the chemical resistance of PAI, epoxy resin was added to form a PAI/epoxy interpenetrating network (IPN) structure. Further, poly(amide-imide-urethane) (PAIU) including polyurethane (PU) in PAI backbone was synthesized to ensure higher thermal stability, and applied as a coverlay using the PAIU/epoxy IPN structure. As a result, when the PAIU content was 50 wt%, coverlay exhibited stable thermal decomposition at 300 oC and chemical resistance to acid at 1.49% and 0.36% of weight loss, respectively, by hydrogen bonding between hard segments. Mechanical properties were confirmed to have excellent toughness with tensile strength of 23.1 MPa and elongation of 32.5% by soft segments. Also, when the manufactured coverlays were coated onto Cu circuit, the FPCB was folded 164 cycles. Therefore, it was determined that composition containing 50 wt% of PAIU was the most appropriate as coverlay materials.
