Non-suicidal self-injury is rapidly increasing incidence among adolescents, and there is a desperate need for understanding or proper intervention on this issue. In this study, we predicted that the maternal non-supportive response to negative emotions, ambivalence over emotional expression, difficulties in emotional regulation, and emotional clarity would affect adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury, and examined the relationship between variables. Between the effects of maternal non-supportive responses to adolescents' negative emotions on their non-suicidal self-injury, ambivalence over emotional expression and difficulties in emotional regulation exhibit a double mediating effect while emotional clarity has a moderating effect and we tried to verify through empirical data. The research questions of this study are as follows. First, does the maternal non-supportive response to adolescents' negative emotions affect their non-suicidal self-injury? Second, do emotional clarity and ambivalence over emotional expression, and difficulties in emotional regulation affect adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury? Third, does ambivalence over emotional expression and difficulties in emotional regulation play a mediating role between a maternal non-supportive response to adolescents' negative emotions and their non-suicidal self-injury? Fourth, do ambivalence over emotional expression, and difficulties in emotional regulation play a double mediating role between the maternal non-supportive response to adolescents' negative emotions and their non-suicidal self-injury? Fifth, does emotional clarity play moderating role between maternal non-supportive response to adolescents' negative emotions and their non-suicide self-injury? A questionnaire survey was conducted for 720 general middle school and high school students in the Gyeonggi area, and the final 714 data sets were used for the study. The measurement tools used in this study are the functional assessment of self-mutilation scale, non-supportive self-injury scale, coping with children's negative emotions scale, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness questionnaire, difficulties in emotional regulation scale, and trait meta-mood scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 18.0, simple regression analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed to explain the influence between the related variables, and hierarchical regression analysis was performed to verify the mediation effect and control effect. In addition, the validity of the research model for the structural relationship between variables was verified, and the direct and indirect effects of the research model were decomposed. The main research results according to the research problem are summarized as follows. First, maternal non-supportive responses to adolescents' negative emotions were found to have a significant effect on their non-suicidal self-injury. Second, emotional clarity and ambivalence over emotional expression, difficulties in emotional regulation were found to have a significant effect on adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury. Third, ambivalence over emotional expression and difficulties in emotional regulation play a mediating role between the maternal non-supportive responses to adolescents' negative emotions and their non-suicidal self-injury, and among them, the emotional regulation strategy access limit, which is a sub-variable of difficulties in emotional regulation, and the lack of emotional clarity were found to have a significant effect on non-suicidal self-injury. Fourth, it was shown that ambivalence over emotional expression and difficulties in emotional regulation play a double mediating role between the maternal non-supportive responses to adolescents' negative emotions and their non-suicidal self-injury. Lastly, emotional clarity was found to play moderating role between the maternal non-supportive responses to adolescents' negative emotions and their non-suicidal self-injury. In summary, we have seen that simulated, maternal non-supportive responses to adolescents' negative emotions affect their emotions and lead to non-suicidal self-injury. The significance of this study was to provide an opportunity to deepen understanding of the relationship between emotional variables as well as data regarding the influence of emotional variables in the maternal non-supportive response to adolescents' negative emotions and their non-suicidal self-injury relationship. It is also significant that it verified the mediating effect of ambivalence over emotional expression and difficulties in emotional regulation and attempts were made to verify the moderating effect of emotional clarity between the maternal non-supportive response to adolescents' negative emotions and their non-suicidal self-injury. This result have shown that it will be helpful to prevent and reduce adolescents' non-suicidal self-injury if adolescents' are able to respond appropriately by paying attention to their emotions, clearly recognizing and processing emotions without suppressing them through counselling. Finally, the limitations and suggestions of this study were discussed.
