The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of Sunmudo, a Korean traditional martial art, on stress and cardiovascular and health factors related to lifestyle-related diseases in middle-aged people through the process of harmonizing the body, mind and breathing through dynamic and static activities. The experimental group of this study was 12 middle-aged men and 12 middle-aged women, and 12 middle-aged women who had been training for more than a year centered on the core programs of Sunmudo, such as Sunmudo meditation, Sunmudo gymnastics, and Sunmudo martial arts, which are the core programs of Sunmudo. 12 middle-aged men who participated for more than one year were openly recruited and the program was conducted. Men who practiced Sunmudo were set in Experimental Group A, middle-aged women who practiced Seonmudo were in Experimental Group B, and middle-aged men who trained in an athletic club were set up as the control group. Sunmudo and stretching programs were conducted 3 times a week, a total of 33 sessions for 11 weeks. The Sunmudo program used in the experimental study was conducted according to the Sunmudo textbook training method. The control group performed the upper and lower body stretching program. For the stress analysis of the experimental group and the control group, psychological and physical stress and chronic stress before and after the program were measured and compared. To analyze the effect on the cardiovascular system, the healthy age of blood vessels was analyzed through an acceleration pulse wave signal measuring instrument that analyzes the waves of microvessels with light, and changes in the health of blood vessels and changes in the autonomic nervous system were compared. To analyze the effect on health factors, the body flexibility before and after the program was measured and compared. As dependent variables, chronic stress, psychological stress, physical stress, flexibility, and vascular health index were used. The data analysis of this study was performed using the SPSS 25.0 statistical program. Pearson correlation coefficient correlation analysis was performed to examine the correlation between each variable of the Sunmudo training program. A paired t-test was used for within the group analysis to investigate the intervention effect of the 12-week Sunmudo training program. To find out the difference between the groups due to the intervention, the difference between the measured changes before and after the intervention between the groups was compared between the groups through one-way ANOVA. After one-way ANOVA, the post-hoc test was performed using the Tukey post-hoc analysis method. The statistical significance level was set to 0.05. The results of this study were as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the change in stress within the group, chronic stress did not decrease statistically in all three groups. Psychological stress was significantly changed according to the intervention in each of the three groups (p<.05). Physical stress also showed a statistically significant change in all three groups (p<.05). Second, as a result of analyzing the flexibility, there was a statistically significant change in experimental group A and experimental group B, in which Sunmudo was performed (p<.05). On the other hand, there was no statistically significant change in the control group. Third, as a result of analyzing changes in autonomic nerves, sympathetic, parasympathetic balance (LF/HF), and cardiac stability (RMSSD) did not show statistically significant changes in all three groups, but showed normal changes. The anti-stress index (SDNN) showed a statistically significant change in experimental group A (p<.05), and there was no change in the other two groups. Fourth, as a result of vascular health index analysis, experimental group A and experimental group B were statistically significantly decreased (p<.05). The control group showed no statistically significant change. The middle-aged female group in experimental group B had the lowest average vascular health age before, but showed the most effective change after Sunmudo training, indicating that vascular health flow improved the most. Through the above study results, it can be seen that the vascular health index that shows the changes in blood flow and circulation, that is, the age of vascular health, was younger, and the circulation of the cardiovascular system was activated, which in turn improved the vascular health. Although Sunmudo training did not change chronic stress, it lowered physical and psychological stress, improved cardiovascular health, and increased physical flexibility. Such positive changes in Sunmudo were found to be effective as a program to harmonize the body, mind, and breathing of middle-aged people. It is thought that more objective and scientific studies should be conducted to improve various indicators of autonomic nervous system related to vascular health and stress after long-term training in the future.
