ABSTRACT
The effect of traditional play using the PMI technique on peer competence and the creative personality of young children.
Choi, Hyun-jung Major in Early Childhood Education Graduate School of Education, Gyeongin National University of Education
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of traditional play using the PMI technique on the peer competence and creative personality of young children. The research questions for the objectives of this research are as follows.
1. What is the effect of traditional play using the PMI technique on young children's peer competence? 2. What is the effect of traditional play using the PMI technique on young children’s creative personality?
This study consisted of 22 children aged five-year-old from S Kindergarten located in P City, Gyeonggi-do Province as the experimental group and 22 children aged five-year-old from T Kindergarten located in the same city as the comparison group. This study was conducted three times a week for 6 weeks with a total of 18 times. The experimental group played traditional games using the PMI three times a week, and the comparison group played general traditional games three times a week.
In this study, the 'Peer Competency Test Tool for Preschool Children' created by Park, Joo-hee and Lee, Eun-hae (2001) was used to measure the peer competence of young children. This tool consists of three sub-factors: sociability, pro-sociality, and initiative. Moreover, to measure the creative personality of infants, the ‘Infant Creative Personality Test Tool’ modified and supplemented by Jeong, Min-ja (2005) was used referring to PRIDE (Preschool and Kindergarten Interest Descriptor) of Rimm (1983). The tool consists of four sub-factors: uniqueness, diverse interests, independence-patience, and imagination-playfulness.
The collected data were analyzed using SPSS Win 22.0 program. The results of the pre-test of the two groups were used as covariates and the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed to verify differences between the groups.
The results of this study are as follows. First, it was found that the traditional play using the PMI technique had a statistically significant effect on young children’s peer competence. In addition, it was found to be statistically significant in 'sociality', 'pro-sociality', and 'initiative', which are sub-factors of peer competence. Second, it was found that traditional play using the PMI technique had a statistically significant effect on young children's creative personalities. Moreover, it was found to be statistically significant in 'uniqueness', 'various interest', 'independence-patience', and 'imagination-play', which are sub-factors of the creative personality. The results of this study suggest that traditional play using the PMI technique in the early childhood education field can have a positive effect on the improvement of young children’s peer competence and creative personality.
