Hempseeds have health effects and nutritional value and are used in a variety of food products. Hempseeds contain cannabinoids as secondary metabolites and the main cannabinoids are △9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is a psychoactive component that has side effects such as hallucinations and paranoia and is regulated in many countries. CBD is a non-psychoactive component that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and is not regulated in many countries. However, CBD has side effects, which means that regulation is required. In Korea, regulations issued by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) requires that hempseeds should not contain > 5 mg/kg of THC or > 10 mg/kg of CBD, and that hempseed oils should not contain > 10 mg/kg of THC or > 20 mg/kg of CBD. In this study, hempseed-derived food samples were extracted using methanol, purified with 200 mg of PREP C18 and 100 mg of primary secondary amine (PSA) and CBD, cannabinol (CBN), THC, cannabidiolic acid (CBDA) and △9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). In food samples, CBD concentrations ranged from 11.18 to 899.37 ng/g (mean 112.63 ng/g) and THC concentrations from 4.97 to 191.97 ng/g (mean 48.98 ng/g). No food samples examined exceeded the concentrations regulated by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS). THC/CBD and log10(THC/CBD) ratios were calculated for 7 of the 48 food samples and ranged from 0.03 to 1.44 (mean 0.30) and -1.59 to 0.16 (mean -0.92), respectively. In this study, the developed simultaneous analysis could be used to monitor whether the cannabinoid contents of hempseed-derived food comply with the MFDS regulatory requirements in the future.
