A Study on Ballade No. 4 in f minor, Op. 52 by F. Chopin

Frederic Chopin (1810-1849), one of the most iconic composers who represent Romanticism of the 19th century, made a great contribution to the development of piano music by concentrating on piano and had a huge influence on not only composer colleagues of his time but also many other composers to this day. While most of his works were dedicated to solo piano, he also left a variety of repertoires, including sonatas, waltzs, polonaises, mazurkas, nocturnes, etudes and ballads. Among them, the ballads are representative character pieces and were first produced by Chopin as solo piano pieces. Before Chopin transformed the ballad into an instrumental piece, it only existed as a popular song or literary genre. Chopin composed four ballads during the period between 1831 and 1842, and this study has taken a close look at Chopin’s unique musical expressions implied in the genre of ballad with focus on , the last piece among the four ballads. , which comes in a free form that develops its theme using the variation technique, is an example of how a new style was developed from what was originally a from of classical music with Chopin’s unique musical expressions. In addition, it clearly and freely reveals a variety of Chopin’s diverse musical expressions, including artful and colorful style, influence of polyphony in Baroque, and Italian opera, frequent uses of 7th and 9th chords, chromatic progression, and brilliant virtuosity. This study examines the musical characteristics imbedded in the life and piano works of Chopin, the four ballads of Chopin briefly and then analyzes , as part of a research into identifying the elements of Chopin’s unique musical expressions shown in the framework of Romantic character piece.
