Establishment of corporate management strategies considering Investor-led ESG is becoming a necessity, not an option, for the sustainable development of companies in response to environmental pollution and social problems. Unlike other industries in the corporate ESG management environment, insurance companies are required to play roles as ESG investors, ESG managers, and ESG risk insurers. Research on the impact remains in its infancy.
In many empirical studies on the relationship between corporate social responsibility activities, which are voluntary predecessors, and business performance, it is reported that there is a positive (+) correlation. In this regard, we examine the impact of ESG activities for sustainable development on insurance companies by solving environmental and social issues and managing risks in a situation where ESG management is becoming essential for companies, and furthermore, The purpose of this study is to suggest a direction for the development of indicators and ESG evaluation suitable for insurance companies.
In order to achieve the purpose of the study, the effects of ESG activities on business performance through the collected data on social contribution activity data, financial data, and management status data from the website disclosure room of 21 domestic life insurance companies and 14 non-life insurance companies The impact was analyzed. After dividing the business performance of an insurance company into financial and non-financial performance, the total asset return, solvency ratio, and operating profit ratio are used for financial performance. The analysis results are as follows.
First, it was confirmed that ESG activities of insurance companies have a positive effect on financial performance. It was found that ESG activity had a statistically significant positive (+) effect on the total asset return and operating profit ratio, but did not have a statistically significant effect on the solvency ratio. This is the analysis result that the insurance company's ESG activities have a positive effect on the profitability of the insurance company, but do not affect the insurance payability. Therefore, it was found that in order to increase financial performance through improving the profitability of insurance companies, it is desirable for insurance companies to more actively carry out ESG activities.
Second, it is analyzed that environment (E) has a statistically significant negative (-) effect on total asset return and operating profit rate, but a statistically significant positive (+) effect on solvency ratio among detailed areas of ESG activities. On the other hand, it was analyzed that social contribution (S) had a statistically significant positive (+) effect on the total asset return and operating profit ratio, but had no significant effect on the solvency ratio. In addition, corporate governance was analyzed to have a statistically significant positive (+) effect on total asset return, solvency ratio, and operating profit ratio. This is an analysis result that detailed ESG activities do not have the same effect on the financial performance of insurance companies, such as profitability and insurance payability. Therefore, although insurance companies should continuously improve their ESG activities, it was found that the more they oriented their efforts to improve corporate governance (G) among detailed activities, the more their profitability and solvency improved.
Third, it was confirmed that ESG activities of insurance companies have a positive effect on non-financial performance. It was confirmed that ESG activities have a positive effect on the new contract rate and contract maintenance rate, and have a negative effect on the occurrence of civil complaints. This leads to an increase in trust between insurance companies and the insurance industry as ESG activities of insurance companies have a positive effect on improving the trust of insurance consumers, leading to increased maintenance of new contracts and insurance contracts. The analysis results show that this can be reduced. Therefore, it was found that in order to increase the non-financial performance of insurance companies, it is necessary to improve sustainability management through ESG activities of insurance companies.
Fourth, among the detailed areas of ESG activities, environment (E) was analyzed to have no statistically significant effect on non-financial performance such as new contract rate, contract maintenance rate, and civil complaints. On the other hand, it was analyzed that social contribution (S) had a statistically significant positive (+) effect on the new contract rate and contract retention rate, and had a statistically significant negative (-) effect on the civil complaint rate. In other words, it was found that the increase in social contribution (S) activities has a positive effect on the non-financial performance of insurance companies. In addition, it was found that the governance structure had a statistically significant positive (+) effect on the new contract rate and the contract maintenance rate, but had no significant effect on civil complaints.
This is an analysis result indicating that detailed ESG activities may have different effects depending on the non-financial performance of insurance companies. Therefore, it was found that although insurance companies should continuously improve ESG activities to increase non-financial performance, more efforts are needed for social contribution (S) activities among detailed activities.
This means that an increase in the social contribution (S) of an insurance company can have a positive effect on the trust formation of insurance consumers by positively affecting the reputation and image of the insurance company and the insurance industry. The results of this analysis can lead insurance companies to judge that it is desirable to conduct ESG activities with different weights on items that have a positive impact on business performance. However, for the sustainable development of insurance companies through ESG, balanced ESG activities are required.
