This study conducted an online survey on 300 adults in their 20s and 30s who had used delivery food service for the past year. The purpose of this study was to investigate the usage behavior and important attributes when using delivered food service, and to provide basic data for the correct choice of delivery food service and healthy eating habits for young adults in today’s era. For this study purpose, research hypotheses were established through prior studies and empirical analysis was conducted accordingly. The research hypotheses established in this study are as follows.
Hypothesis 1. There will be significant differences in general characteristics by dietary lifestyle type. Hypothesis 2. There will be a significant difference between the dietary lifestyle and the dietary habits. Hypothesis 3. There will be a significant difference between the dietary lifestyle and the behavior of delivery food service usage. Hypothesis 4. There will be a significant difference between the dietary lifestyle and the attribute of delivery food selection.
For the data, frequency analysis, reliability analysis, factor analysis, group analysis, and one-way ANOVA were performed using SPSS 23.0 program. The comparative analysis results by composing the general characteristics, eating habits, general characteristics of using delivered food service, importance-satisfaction of delivery place selection attributes, dietary lifestyle, and health behavior are as follows.
1. The general characteristic category showed an even distribution with 48% male, 52% female, and age 25-29 years old 35.7%, 20-24 years old 24.3% 30-34 years old 22.7%, and 35-39 years old 17.3%.
2. In terms of health behavior, ‘feeling a lot of stress’ was the most at 46.3%, and for eating behavior during stress, drinking was the most at 28% and eating delivery food was the most at 24%.
3. The total of 21 items of food and lifestyle items were classified into 4 factors: ‘trend-seeking type’, ‘health-seeking type’, ‘taste-seeking type’, and ‘economic-seeking type.’
4. Through group analysis, the factors were classified into three groups that were Group 1 (health-seeking type), Group 2 (taste economy seeking type), and Group 3 (trend-seeking type) (p<.001).
5. In terms of the general characteristics of each group, a significant difference was shown among gender (p<.001), age (p<.05), residence (p<.01), occupation (p<.001), educational background (p<.01), and obesity (p<.001). Among them, normal weight had the highest degree of obesity in all three groups, but group 2 (taste economy seeking type) showed very high ratio of overweight and obesity compared to other groups (p<.001).
6. In the characteristics of dietary habits by group, there were significant differences in preferred diet (p<.001), preferred taste (p<.01), time required for one meal (p<.01), number of breakfasts (p<.001), number of late-night meals, and the number of snacks (p<.05). Group 1 (health-seeking type) especially had a higher ratio of preference for light taste, the ratio of more than 30 minutes of mealtime, and the ratio of having breakfast every day were very high compared to other groups. 7. As for the number of late-night meals, not eating them was very high in Group 1 (health-seeking type) compared to other groups (58%), and 3-4 times a week for Group 2 (taste economy seeking type) and 1-2 times a week for Group 3 (trend-seeking type) accounted for the largest proportion.
8. The most common late-night meals consumed were fast food at 60% or more in all three groups, and beverages accounted for 50% or more of snacks in all three groups.
9. As for the characteristics of delivery food service use by group, there were significant differences in the number of times delivery food service used (p<.001), the day of use (p<.001), and the place to order (p<.01), but there was no significant difference in the information media of delivery food service.
10. The main reason for not using delivered food was 'expensive price' in all groups, but nutrient imbalance was 70.4% in the group 1 (health-seeking type), which showed a distinctive characteristic from other groups.
11. As for the use of delivery food service, 'for one meal' was found to be very high at over 89.9% in all groups. In addition, hospitality showed a higher level in group 1 (health-seeking type) than the other groups, and side dish with alcohol was higher in group 2 (taste economy seeking type) than other groups.
12. This study examined the types of delivery food and showed that fast food was the most common in all groups, followed by Korean food. Fast food delivery was low and Japanese food delivery was high in group 1 (health-seeking type) compared to other groups, and in group 2 (taste economy seeking type), Chinese food was almost twice as high as in other groups.
13. As for the characteristics of each group according to the delivery restaurant selection attributes, there was a significant difference only in food quality both in importance and satisfaction, but there was no significant difference in service quality. To select a delivery restaurant, group 1 (health-seeking type) and group 3 (trend-seeking type) place more importance on food quality than group 2 (taste economy seeking type) (p<.001). For in satisfaction, group 2 (taste economy seeking type) and group 3 (trend-seeking type) regarded food quality as more important than group 1 (health-seeking type) (p<.05).
The results of this research are as follows. Group 1 (health-seeking type) pursues a balanced diet and light taste compared to the other two group. The ratio of having breakfast every day, not eating late-night meals, and choosing 'nutrition imbalance' as the cause of not using delivery food service showed high characteristics. In group 2 (taste economy seeking type), the ratio of overweight and obesity were higher than in other groups, and those who prefer a meat diet and not eat breakfast were overwhelmingly higher (77.8%). The ratio of using delivery food after 9pm was also higher than the other two groups, and the ratio of consuming alcohol at night was also the highest. Even if you eat the same amount of food late at night, it is easy to accumulate in the body because it is fast to convert to fat, so it is easy to become obese if you enjoy late-night snacks. It is often difficult to secure breakfast time due to late bedtime and wake-up time due to late-night snacks, which hinders the formation of proper eating habits34). It is necessary to avoid eating delivery food as a late-night snack because it can show nutritional imbalance along with undesirable eating habits. Therefore, in order to choose the right delivery food and form a balanced diet, professional nutrition education is necessary.
Group 2 (taste economy seeking type) requires nutrition education on proper health weight management and the importance of breakfast. In addition, since the number of alcohol consumption as a late-night snack and the rate of ordering delivery food for alcohol snacks was higher than that of other groups, education on alcohol and health is expected to be necessary. In addition, there is a need for nutrition education on how to choose a healthy meal and how to avoid high-calorie and low-nutritive foods through nutrition labeling reading education.
Group 3 (trend seeking type), the rate of eating snacks more than three times a week was high at 57.0%, and drinks were consumed the most as snacks. The prevalence of sweetened drinks leads to an increase in obesity and associated metabolic diseases in some cases36). Therefore, it is necessary to teach how to avoid foods with high sugar content and how to choose nutritionally balanced foods through nutrition labelling reading education.
The limitations of this study are as follows. First, there is a limit to generalizing the study results to entire South Korea since the sample for analysis was limited to adults in their 20s and 30s. Second, this study used a limited range of dietary lifestyle types, so it cannot cover various categories. Therefore, future follow-up research should select a wide range of subjects by adding factors of dietary and lifestyle.
