Ceramics are the arts combined with creator’s spirit and nature based on soil and fire. Ceramics reflecting the accumulated scientific technologies of time have been endlessly innovated by adjusting to aesthetic changes and necessities of human life. Examining the developmental trajectory of culture & arts of mankind, the area of arts has different expression methods in each country according to culture, social structure, race, and way of thinking. The creators apply the aesthetic notion felt in daily environment to their works. This implies things like ethnic customs, aesthetic taste, and thought & ideology of creators, and based on this, other works with different style and character are created. Under the theme of a case study on the modern application of Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains, first, this study explained the research background, objective, and methodology, and then examined the history, characteristics, and exchange relationship of Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains. After that, this study organized the future look by analyzing the modern cases of applying Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains. As the introduction, first, ChapterⅠ mentioned the meanings and implications of this study by revealing the background, objective, scope, and methodology of this thesis. In China, the blue and white porcelains appeared in the Tang & Song Dynasties, got matured in the Yuan Dynasty, and had the golden age in the Ming & Qing Dynasties. In Korea, the blue and white porcelains were produced in the royal kiln of Gwangju that used to produce the white porcelains in the Joseon Dynasty of the 15th century. Even though the development process of blue and white porcelains was different in both countries, the original starting point was the contact with outside, which is the common feature. China accepted the blue and white porcelains through exchanges with Islamic culture while Korea accepted them from China. Keeping this historical background in mind, this study approached the originality and interrelation of Korean blue and white porcelains and Chinese blue and white porcelains at the same time based on the results of preceding researches related to Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains, and then analyzed the modern cases of applying and exchanging Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains. ChapterⅡ·Ⅲ collected/organized the historical data related to the birth of blue and white porcelains in both Korea and China, comparatively analyzed Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains in the same period of time, analyzed the mutual influence relation by mainly considering the characteristics of molding, basic form, decoration, and composition of blue and white porcelains, and then examined the effects of royal kiln system on blue and white porcelains after the appearance of royal kiln. First, this study researched the origin and background of white porcelains before the appearance of blue and white porcelains, and also examined the occurrence process of blue and white porcelains. The origin of white porcelains goes back to the early white porcelains excavated from the remains of Anyang, Hanam in the Northern Qi Dynasty. In Korea, the white porcelains were produced for the first time in the Goryeo Dynasty, which faced the golden age in the Joseon Dynasty. In China, the blue and white porcelains were originated in the Tang & Song Dynasties, got matured in the Yuan Dynasty, and reached the golden age in the Ming Dynasty. The cobalt which was the pigment of early blue and white porcelains was directly imported from Persia. In the Ming Dynasty, an imperial ceramic plant was formally established in Jingdezhen, and the blue and white porcelains only for the royal family were produced. In the Joseon Dynasty, the blue and white porcelains were introduced through the political/cultural exchange channel with China in the 15th century. The Joseon royal family that was fascinated by the blue and white porcelains started making the blue and white porcelains by imitating Chinese ones. The center of the production was the royal kiln in Gwangju, and there were changes according to the time or taste of royal family. In the 16th century, the glaze color of blue and white porcelains showed the light-blue advanced unique pattern of the Joseon Dynasty after getting out of the imitation of the Ming Dynasty while there were some partial changes in the basic form. ChapterⅣ revealed that the blue and white porcelains of China had the different style in each period of time through a research on the characteristics of formative arts, and that the formativeness and decoration of blue and white porcelains in the Yuan Dynasty had not only the inheritance of tradition, but also the new creation. In case of Korean blue and white porcelains, the national taste and needs were multilaterally reflected onto the pattern, basic form, and style, which became the representative porcelain of the Joseon Dynasty. The formative and decorative characteristics were realized in each period of the early, mid, and late stage. On top of comparatively analyzing the representative form and pattern of Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains, this study revealed the differences and common features of the same object form and pattern decoration between Korea and China in the same period of time. As the analysis on the material of Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains, ChapterⅤ organized the analysis data related to the component of pigment and characteristics of clay in each period of the Yuan, Ming, and Qing Dynasties of China, and also verified that the mixture of porcelain clay and kaolin in the Yuan Dynasty was applied as the clay of Iwonbaebang. As the pigment of blue and white porcelains, the ‘sumaliqing’ imported from Islamic region and ‘toqing’ from China were used together. As the pigment of blue and white porcelains had the different content of iron in each period, the color development of pigment after plasticity was shown differently a bit. According to the Joseon literature records related to the pigment of blue and white porcelains, the Islamic cobalt raw materials was used for the blue and white porcelains of the Joseon Dynasty. In order to research Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains, ChapterⅥ explained the case analysis utilized in the concept of blue and other areas. Just as shown in cases of modern blue and white porcelain artists in Korea and China, the ceramic culture of Korea and China not only inherits the traditional ceramic techniques, but also diversely pursuits the practicality, artistry, modernity, and minimalism through the convergence between genres and various attempts. This study comprehensively researched the developing history in the artistic perspective and the modern application of blue and white porcelains in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do of Korea and Jingdezhen of China. The artistic prosperity of the ancient blue and white porcelains in Jingdezhen is related to the continuity of human resources and advantageous natural conditions of Jingdezhen. With the appearance of modern industry and post-industry era in both Korea and China, the production industry of blue and white porcelains faced the pluralistic competition and pluralistic development. Meanwhile, the appearance of modern industry and post-industry era led the ceramic industry of Korea and China to the pluralistic competition and development. Based on the learning and experience in the artistic history of Korean-Chinese blue and white porcelains, ChapterⅦ aimed to verify that the major contradiction the Korean-Chinese ceramic industry had to face in the modernization era was the conflict between transmission and development, and conflict between transmission and innovation. Even though it is unrealistic to completely recover the glory of the ancient blue and white porcelains under the condition of the present era, it is wrong to view the tradition separately from the innovation. Fully converging the relation between transmission and innovation of artistic techniques of blue and white porcelains and also finding the best point of combination are the top-priority tasks to solve for the development of modern blue and white porcelains.
