The global economy has created a new paradigm called the 'sharing economy' with the continuous development of the Internet and technology, which has led to new job types and activities to create additional income. The sharing economy is developing in various industrial fields. Among them, shared accommodation is the most growing business field in the sharing economy. However, conflict with traditional industries and the government's unreasonable application of regulations are hindering the growth of shared accommodation. The fostering of new industries may generate various external effects. However, it may also contribute to regional economic growth by positively affecting the proportion of local employment. The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effect of Airbnb on local employment through temporal and spatial analysis by expanding the research scope of previous studies dealing with the effects of existing shared accommodation from the industry to the regional level. The research focus was on 'Airbnb', a representative online platform service that connects a provider who rents an idle space to a consumer who needs it. The analysis is a panel data that utilizes geographical and temporal changes in the impact of increasing the number of shared accommodations on employment in the region through an empirical statistical model that targets the Korean region based on the economic foundation theory. For this empirical analysis ‘Difference-In-Difference’ method was used. In this study, the employment effect of Airbnb was analyzed from three aspects. First, we estimated the relationship between the number of Airbnb rooms and the total number of employees in each region across the country. Next, considering the possibility that the economic effect of Airbnb may be different among sub-industries, the employment effect on the industrial sector related to accommodation facilities was mainly examined. Last, by examining the employment effect on unrelated industries that are not related to the increase or decrease of Airbnb, the reliability of the previous study results was verified once again. For the total number of employees in all analysis models, the number of Airbnb rooms measured one year before the observation of the total number of employees was set as the treatment variable, considering the possibility that Airbnb's employment effect would be reflected in the total number of employees with a certain time lag. The analysis results of this study are as follows. First, as for the employment effect of the entire industry, when the number of Airbnb in any municipality increases by 1 unit (100) while controlling for the fixed effect of region and year, the total number of employees increases from about 46(=46.44) to about 52(=51.60) appeared to increase. Second, the employment effect of Airbnb's related industries was very heterogeneous by industry. This indicates that even in industries closely related to Airbnb, the effect does not always increase but decreases in some industries. However, the offset of the increase or decrease by industry is eventually increased the total employment effect. Finally, as a result of examining the employment effect on unrelated industries, the increase in the number of Airbnb in regions did not have a significant effect on the employment effect of industries not related to Airbnb. Through this result, the reliability was confirmed once again. According to the results of the analysis, although there was a difference by industry sector, it was found that the regional employment effect of the increase in the number of Airbnb had a positive effect on the total employment effect of the region. Following the result, the implications of this study are presented as follows. First, the increase in Airbnb has the potential to revitalize the local economy by flowing labor forces into the region from the outside, especially in the case of a relatively small population or tourism marginalized region. Second, regional employment effect of shared accommodation differs by industry sector. Therefore, if someone plans to introduce a new business in an area where the shared accommodation infrastructure is well established, exploring industrial sectors that can coexist with the shared accommodation industry would be need. To continue the shared accommodation industry as an industry with a virtuous cycle of job creation and economic growth, it is necessary to prepare countermeasures from the government and local governments to respond to social problems that may arise from shared accommodation. Therefore, this study is expected to be used as useful basic data for predicting the effect of job creation when establishing policies for regional economic development and revitalization.
