This study attempted to derive the comprehensive results of the early maladaptive schema studies conducted individually on adults. In addition, by dividing the variables related to the early maladaptive schemas into protective and risk variables and analyzing their effect size, this study tried to determine the priority level of the effects of each related variable. Furthermore, this study attempted to estimate the cause of the heterogeneity of the effect size by setting individual variables related to the form of study subject of study, and the early maladaptive schemas as control variables. To this end, this study performed a meta-analysis by collecting 18 quantitative studies related to the early maladaptive schemas for adults among theses, dissertations and journal articles published for about 21 years from 2001 to December 31, 2021, when studies related to psychological schema therapy in Korea were found. The results of this study are as follows. First, the overall effect size of the variables affecting the early maladaptive schemas was small. With protective variables, the early maladaptive schemas showed a negative correlation and a small effect size. However, it showed a positive correlation with risk variables and a high effect size even with the medium effect size. Protective variables have a low correlation, but risk variables have a medium or higher significance from an educational and therapeutic point of view. Therefore, this study confirmed the need to take into account the influence of risk variables in the intervention of counseling and education for adults. Second, the effect size for each domain of the early maladaptive schemas of adults was shown in the order of impaired autonomy and impaired performance, disconnection and rejection, other-directedness, overvigilance and inhibition, and impaired limits. Looking at each domain, the effect size of the disconnection and rejection domain was shown in the order of abandonment/instability, social isolation/alienation, mistrust/abuse, defectiveness/shame, and emotional deprivation. In terms of risk variables in the disconnection and rejection domain, addiction, maladaptive interpersonal relationships, rejection sensitivity, insecure attachment, negative emotions, negative cognition, maladaptive interpersonal relationships, and maladaptive coping methods were found in order. And, protective variables were shown in the order of self-concept clarity, optimism, and social support. Regarding the impaired autonomy and performance domain, vulnerability to harm or illness, dependence/incompetence, enmeshment/underdeveloped self, and failure were found in order. The risk variables include maladaptive emotion regulation strategy, depression, anxiety, and maladaptive interpersonal relationships, and the protective variables were adaptive emotion regulation strategy and marital satisfaction. Concerning the domain of impaired limits, insufficient self-control/self-discipline and entitlement/grandiosity schemas were found in order. Maladaptive emotion regulation strategy, addiction, and procrastination were found to be risk variables, and protective variables did not show any significant results. When it comes to the other-directedness domain, approval-seeking/recognition-seeking, subjugation, and self-sacrifice schemas were found in order. The risk variables include basic psychological needs frustration, maladaptive emotion regulation strategy, addiction, depression, and procrastination, and the protective variable was marital satisfaction. In terms of overvigilance and inhibition, negativity/pessimism, punishment, emotional inhibition, and unrelenting standards/hypercriticalness were found in order. For risk variables, procrastination, pathological personality, addiction, depression, and anxiety were significant, while marital satisfaction and adaptive emotion regulation strategy were significant for protective variables. This study confirmed that there are protective variables of positive attributes that prevent and weaken the permanence of maladaptive psychological schemas in the early maladaptive schemas and risk variables that perpetuate self-destructive attributes of the early maladaptive schemas. Third, in terms of the early maladaptive schemas and the moderating variables of overall variables, degree theses, dissertations, have more influence than journal articles, and non-general adults have more influence than general adults. Individual variables showed in the order of negative emotions, social support, maladaptive mental health, self-concept clarity, maladaptive interpersonal relationships, negative cognition, rejection sensitivity, insecure attachment, and ambivalence over emotional expression. As a moderating variable affecting the relationship between the early maladaptive schema and the protective variables, journal articles were more influential than theses, dissertations, and the significant influence of the study subjects was unknown. As a moderating variable affecting the relationship between the early maladaptive schema and the protective variables, journal articles were more influential than theses, dissertations, and the significant influence of the study subjects was unknown. With respect to the influence of individual variables, social support, self-concept clarity, optimism, positive cognition, positive emotion, and positive problem-solving behavior were found in order. Risk variables appeared in the order of journal articles and theses, and in terms of the study subjects, the result showed that general adults had a greater influence than non-general adults (individual variables include negative emotions, maladaptive mental health, maladaptive interpersonal relationships, negative cognition, rejection sensitivity, insecure attachment). And, the ambivalence over emotional expression was found to have a high effect size. This study divided the relevant variables of the early maladaptive schema of adults into risk variables and protective variables and confirmed their effect sizes. Based on the results, this study presented implications for the early maladaptive schema in adults and suggestions for follow-up studies.
