This dissertation aims to look at fandom cultures for Korean idols from both an insider and an outsider’s lenses with the purpose of analyzing specific forms of daily cultural practices in the fandom. Fandom for Korean idols has diversified with the changes of pop industry and society since idol musicians emerged in South Korea in the middle of the 1990s till present. For understing of these trends, I navigate key concepts necessary to understand fandom culture in the dissertation, based on qualitative research that includes multiple sessions of in-depth interviews, focal group interviews, online communications with idol fans and the industry personnel, which I have conducted not only to grasp their experiences and thoughts but also to refer to them for the dissertation writing, as well as my own participant observation of fandom. The key concepts discussed and explored in this dissertation are as follows: ‘fantasy’; ‘cultural practice’; and ‘cultural community.’ Fandom can create ‘fantasies’ that individual fans and fan groups are indulging in. However, these fantasies can be modified. If the fans are not allowed to modify their fantasies or they find a huge difference between the existing and modified fantasies, fandom cannot operate constantly. Fans’ ‘cultural practices’ reflect their everyday, customary performances carried out in fandom, as well as fans’ preferences. To shape the preference, fandom of Korean idols not only expends capitals but is also significantly influenced by mass and social media. Fandom as a ‘cultural community,’ which is far beyond the existing and general concept of a community, enables fans to construct an online society where the fans can make either casual or close relationships with each other even if they, as strangers, have never met. This cultural community in fandom can be occasionally shaped across online and offline worlds. Fans are not always experiencing the cultural community within their fandom in a positive way but the participants in my dissertation research confirm that their experience of the community has gone positively. It is more meaningful for many fans to experience the cultural community rather than to merely commit only to idol stars as fandom. Even more importantly, the experience of the cultural community within fandom makes an indelible impression on the fans in various ways. For research on this dissertation, I firstly review the established studies that surveys K-pop and its fandom. Also, I anonymize K-pop idols except particular cases in order to claim that fandom cannot be specific to each idol but can be commonly experienced. Secondly, I trace a history of fandom for idols and delineate it. I then analyze the change of fandom resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic from the industry and fandom’s perspectives. More specifically, I examine whether fans can achieve intimacy with their favorite idols through the paid membership for an online messenger service for the K-pop idols and fandom, which has been launched since the pandemic. For this examination, I rely on the fans’ perception and experience of the service. The examination is also to comprehend whether the service can be specific to K-pop idols. Additionally, I not only look at characteristic movements of the online and offline cultural practices in fandom but also describe how fandom gets systematized and organized. For this description, I delve into how fans can be categorized according to their different roles as producers, transmitters, and consumers, as well as how these fans can interact with and influence one another. I then suggest that the small number of fan producers and transmitters can occupy more prominent positions than other fans within fandom. Finally, I, analyzing and illustrating the characteristics of fandom for Korean idols as a community, demonstrate how fans identify themselves with K-pop idol fandom, and how fans with different fantasies are conflicting with each other. This dissertation presents the multiple relationships between the idol industry, idol fandom and diverse phenomena in the contemporary Korean society, further it prospects fandom’s crisis and future. The dissertation eventually provides in-depth understanding of K-pop and its fandom. It also argues that issues of and around K-pop are associated with social issues in South Korea. Although fandom itself seems passive, fans as individual members of the civil society contemplate and discuss how they make an appropriate choice on the conflict between their fondness and ethic for idols. According to their choice, the fans might disagree with each other but should be led to the progressive direction. Thus, fandom should not only function as the cultural community rooted in fans’ fondness for idols but also be separate from ‘fantasies’ that weave idols, leading to fans’ own cultural practice and experience of their own community. The process of research on this fandom culture for Korean idols will be part of a search for the development of Korean culture.
