Obesity is a common postpartum condition among Korean women, and it is a major contributor to both physical and mental health issues. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of postpartum obesity exercise regimens for women in their 20s and 40s on physical composition, physical strength, body balance, and postpartum depression.
Twenty women in their 20s and 40s with a body fat percentage of 30% or higher served as the study's subjects. They were divided into two groups: an experimental group (n = 10) that participated in mat pilates and weight training exercise programs, and a control group (n = 10) that participated only in mat pilates exercise programs.
Before beginning of the program and after the intervention of mat pilates and weight training exercise program, the individuals completed a questionnaire for physical composition, physical strength, balance, and postpartum depression. The intervention was applied twice a week for 8 weeks in total 16 sessions.
The outcomes are as follows: The experimental group that performed the weight training exercise program in addition to matpilates showed improvements in body composition (p<.05), right arm grip strength (t=-2.259, p<.05) muscular endurance (t=-2.756, p<.05), and postpartum depression (t=3.616, p<.01) when compared to the control group that only performed mat pilates.
There was no significant difference in flexibility or body balance.
In comparison to the control group the experimental group significantly improved basic physical strength, body balance, and lowered postpartum depression.
As a result, pilates and weight training exercise programs play an important role and it can be of great benefit in physical and mental healthcare for postpartum obese women.
Follow up study is necessary in longer term of intervention with various exercise programs for larger number of postpartum obese women participants.
