The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of 12-week Pilates exercise on body composition, risk factors for cardiovascular metabolic disease, mental health, and physical stability in postpartum women. The subjects of this study were postpartum women aged 30~40 years (body height: 163.9 ± 4.89 cm, body weight: 60.3 ± 8.40 kg, body mass index: 22.4 ± 3.04 kg/m2, percent body fat: 19.3 ± 5.99 %). The subjects were divided into two groups (exercise, n=34; control, n=24). The subjects in the exercise group performed Pilates exercise twice a week for 50 minutes per session on the reformer for 12 weeks, and the subjects in the control group did not exercise other than their usual physical activity during the intervention period. Body composition, risk factors for cardiovascular metabolic disease, mental health, and body stability were measured before-and after 12 weeks of exercise. The statistical significance level was set to 0.05. The results indicate that significant interaction effects of time and group were obtained on body weight, fat mass, percent body fat and skeletal muscle mass. Body weight, fat mass, percent body fat and waist circumference in the exercise group were significantly reduced but increase in muscle mass after 12 weeks of Pilates exercise. TG was significantly reduced in the exercise group. Significant improvements were found for SPISE, quality of life and functional movement in the exercise group throughout the intervention. Therefore this study suggests that 12 week-Pilates exercise could be an optimal exercise protocol for postpartum women to improve body composition, cardiovascular metabolic risk factors, mental health and body stability.
