The purpose of this study is to examine in depth the literacy experiences of 4-year-old children who participated in reading Alphabet books, and to discover how Alphabet books affect children's literacy development. To achieve the purpose of this study, the research question is as follows.
1. How does the literacy development of 4-year-old children take place in the process of reading Alphabet books?
The subjects of this study were 12 4-year-old children in a Kindergarten in Seoul. The research participants participated in 16 Alphabet book reading activities once a week from April 4 to July 19, 2022. In addition to the Alphabet book reading activities with the researcher, the homeroom teacher collected the data, ㅊwhenever children autonomously read Alphabet books, and observed literacy activities that occurred naturally during the day. In this study, the data were collected through the transcriptions of photographs and videos, the homeroom teacher journals, and the interviews with the subjects. The collected data were analyzed according to the three steps of the iterative comparative analysis method: 'open coding', 'categorization', and 'category identification'. The summary of the results obtained through the analysis is as follows. First, children reached 'voluntary interest and understanding of letters' through Alphabet books. Children who interacted with the Alphabet book by seeing, hearing and reading were able to distinguish the shape of the letters first. After learning the shape of the letters, the children's interest naturally transitioned to the shapes of their names in alphabets. Ultimately, they found pleasure in recognizing alphabet letters in not only their own names or friends' names in Alphabet books but also in printed Korean words in their surroundings. They tried to read familiar letters in their daily lives by discovering the letters they knew around them. Second, the subjects started to enjoy ‘playing and having communication with their peers using letters’. They played name making games using various toys and materials building their interest on top of finding letters in their names. They also enjoyed playing the ‘word ending game’ utilizing their vocabularies they learned from the Alphabet book. Furthermore, young children with even more interests wrote letters to each other. This letter exchange activity provided an opportunity for young children to recognize the necessity and importance of literacy in real life. Later on, a letter treasure hunt was conducted where the subjects find hidden letter cards in a classroom to combine as words and exchange letters. Literacy growth was observed in the process of finding letters, combining to words and then using them to write letters. Third, the children, who participated in reading the Alphabet books and actively interacted with books, found 'the pleasure of being a reader'. They voluntarily searched for names or words containing the corresponding letters in the Alphabet book. They were also able to read the paratext meticulously without missing it. Along with this, they came to understand the book more deeply by grasping the hidden intentions of the writer. Children who thoroughly enjoyed Alphabet books like this gradually began to find and read various picture books by themselves. Having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to read books, the children helped other friends to read picture books and honed their skill as reader. Fourth, the children went beyond being the readers of the Alphabet books and found the 'joy of creating books as writers'. With the growing interests, the children created their own version of the Alphabet books. After that, they began to create picture books of various contents and formats using creativity. The process of making their own book culminated, their interst in books and gave them enjoyment in reading books more and more. This led to natural, basic writing skills development. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively investigate the effect of the Alphabet books on the literacy development of 4-year-old children. As a result of the study, the children enjoyed discovering letters in the surrounding environment and voluntarily acquired knowledge about Alphabet letters. They also found the pleasure in using words and writing by playing various games using letters with their friends. Furthermore, the power of literacy to use Alphabet letters in real context and problem solving skill were also develpoed. They also took the initiative in finding and reading various picture books in the classroom, including Alphabet books, and enjoyed reading books as a competent reader. Not only this, through the process of becoming a writer oneself and making Alphabet and creative picture books, they naturally became interested in writing. Through the experiences above, children's overall preference for books and voluntary motivation for literacy activities increased. Ultimately, this study is to reveal the literacy educational value of the Alphabet books and to support the literacy development of young children in the educational field.
