Relationship between physical activity and oral health under stress and sleep deprivation: a cross-sectional study in Korean adults (KNHANES 2013-2019)원문보기

(1-2일/주(OR 0.740, 95% CI 0.556-0.984), 3-5일/주(OR 0.634, 95% CI 0.493-0.815), >5일/주(OR 0.708, 95% CI 0.550-0 0.912)).

Purpose: Stress and sleep deprivation promote inducing inflammatory cytokines that destroy periodontal tissue and affect oral health. On the other hand, exercise is known to lower cortisol levels and make the whole body healthy. Therefore, this study was performed to investigate whether physical activity can alleviate the effects of stress and lack of sleep on oral health. Materials and methods: A total of 13,872 Korean adults (age range: 19-64) based on the data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) between 2013 and 2019, excluding adolescents and the elderly, were analyzed. Toothache and oral health status were obtained from the survey, and the sum of the CPI values and the presence of periodontal disease were obtained through the examination. Regarding those dental problems, the influence of walking, strength exercise, or aerobic physical activity was investigated under the condition of high perceived stress or sleeping less than 6 hours. Logistic regression and linear regression analysis were performed, and the significance level (p-value) was set to 0.05. Results: On the sum of CPI values, all exercises were effective (p 5 days/week (OR 0.708, 95% CI 0.550–0.912). There was no significance between caries-experienced permanent teeth and perceived stress or sleep. Conclusion: It is expected that proper physical activities may mitigate the adverse effects on oral health caused by stress and short sleep time.
