There are various social problems such as traffic congestion and carbon emission due to urban concentration of population and infrastructure in the metropolitan area. However, the improvement of transportation infrastructure such as roads and railways is expected to be physically limited. Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is being introduced to solve urban traffic problems. Since UAM vertiport is an important transportation networks combined with air traffic, the location of the vertiports should be in a place that is considered technical feasibility as well as convenient accessibility.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the key factors of urban transportation infrastructure planning by construction experts and potential users in the urban transportation infrastructure vertiport in the early stage of urban air traffic (UAM) development. Also, to suggest the importance and influence of location factors based on various analysis systems of AHP, factor analysis, and regression analysis.
The scope of the study premise the regional transit infrastructure, vertiport, which is responsible for the passage between major regions within the metropolitan area. It considers its service function and role in the urban transportation system in the UAM commercialization stage. The main topic of this research is to analyze the importance of the key factors selected by the super experts in the academic and policy research fields from the expert-oriented perspective and the user-oriented viewpoint. Also, location factors in terms of the use environment for the increase of UAM use are presented.
Previous studies are mainly focused on supply and technology engineering location factors. This study differentiates by deducting location factors in terms of user environment centered on vertiport users including technical engineering factors such as economic installation cost, demand for use, and safety. In the early stage of development for UAM commercialization, survey of location factors of planning and construction experts and potential users of UAM in the metropolitan area vertiport were done.
In this study, the following three results were deduced. Firstly, compared similar factors that super experts and potential users thought about the key variables affecting the location of the vertiport in terms of the UAM user environment. In addition, the importance of the key variables that appeared in the AHP survey from the expert perspective and the employee survey from the user perspective were presented. In addition, factor analysis was conducted to analyze the casual relationship between the location factors of bertiport and the increase of UAM usage in terms of the user environment.
First, there was no significant difference in the classification of the components of the core variables from the experts in the academic and policy research fields of urban transportation infrastructure and the workers in the related fields from the user's point of view. However, from the user's perspective, the activation of urban space use in relation to the location of vertiport is considered to be a factor close to economic efficiency. Moreover, the improvement of the roof of the building and the traffic inconvenience area are not considered to have a significant effect on the location of UAM vertiport.
Second, difference between the importance of key variables of workers in the related field from the perspective of experts in the planning and construction of urban transportation infrastructure and the perspective of users were concluded. As a result of comparing the key variables up to the 4th priority, experts in the planning and construction field responded that it is most important to activate the use of urban space by installing it in the railway station area, which is the urban infrastructure of the urban area. Also, presented characteristics of the planner's viewpoint of building a new transportation system. Potential users selected the location with good transfer accessibility in the urban area. It was analyzed that there is a difference in the viewpoint of the key variables in terms of the use environment as a professional field to understand UAM.
Finally, as a result of analysis of the relationship between the factors through factor analysis of the core variables and the increase in UAM use, accessibility is the most important factor in increasing the use. This means that the function and role of the vertiport in terms of the use environment should be centered. In addition, as a variable of accessibility factors, the accessibility of connected traffic and transfer should be considered simultaneously with the possibility of demand creation and construction easiness, which are variables of economic factors. In other words, it is linked to the importance of being installed in urban infrastructure (roads, railways, parks, parking lots, etc.) in urban areas.
So far, the results of this study showed that the factors affecting the location of Vertiport for UAM use increase were the similarity of the variables from the viewpoint of policy and planning and the importance of the influential factors. In addition, the relationship between location factors and the effect on UAM use increase was found, and the result of segmentation analysis by occupation type and professional field is not significant at the present stage and is judged to be in referred.
This study is meaningful by presenting the location factors of vertiport in the early stage of national R&D for the commercialization of UAM in terms of environmental use. Based on the results, it is expected that it will be helpful for the role of UAM as urban transportation network and expansion of people's right to move.
This study is significant by drawing the factors influencing the location of UAM vertiport, which have hardly been discussed academically, and calculated the importance. In the absence of empirical cases and institutional standards, discussing the location of UAM Vertiport in preparation for the future can give implications for future urban planning. On the other hand, since most of the previous studies are unproved academically research, there is a limit to the empirical analysis of the influential factors. Based on this, there is a limit in which the criterions for judging legitimacy are not clear.
UAM is composed of link and node like traditional transportation such as air, railway, and bus, and the location of transit infrastructure, vertiport, should consider two factors. The link should take into account the interference with the aircraft, the safety of the entry and exit airspace, the climate factor, the laws and systems related to air traffic management, etc., and the take-off and landing area (node) should take into account land use, cost, demand for use, obstacles, constructability, power source, and installation standards. This study presents the UAM vertiport influence factors and their importance, focusing on the user, the main user, rather than the location conditions of the construction and supply aspects. In addition, this study selected the factors influencing the accessibility of users based on the physical criterions of railway and bus connection and vertiport and transit distance. Users' satisfaction with transfer activity is closely related to the physical system and transfer service. Therefore, in the future, it is necessary to study the location influence factors reflecting the user transfer service factors.
In particular, the results of this study showed that the factors affecting living environment such as noise and safety lacked statistical significance in the analysis by occupation type. But this is considered to be the characteristics of the survey result on the increase of UAM use that does not exist, and it is considered to be the most important factor in the implementation stage in the future. It is judged that sufficient additional research considering the factors such as the opinion of the residents in the installation area is necessary.
