This study aimed to investigate teachers' perceptions and demands regarding the utilization of artificial intelligence-based tools in children's play. The study included 376 preschool teachers working in kindergartens and daycare centers with children aged 3 to 5 years old. To explore teachers' perceptions and demands regarding the utilization of artificial intelligence-based tools in children's play, a questionnaire was developed and utilized in accordance with the objectives of this study. The collected data were analyzed using frequency and percentage, mean and standard deviation, and correlation analysis. Qualitative responses were also analyzed through content analysis, consisting of 48 cases.
The results of this study are as follows: Firstly, the artificial intelligence-based tools that teachers can utilize in children's play are AI speakers, AI-related apps, and smart lenses. It was perceived that the appropriate age to start utilizing artificial intelligence-based tools in children's play is from the age of 5, during indoor free play time when children can play autonomously, and specifically in the science exploration domain of the national curriculum. The purpose of using artificial intelligence-based tools was to provide children with indirect experiences that closely resemble real-life situations. Teachers perceived difficulties in utilizing various programs or content to support children's play due to a lack of available resources. It was recognized that guidelines for utilizing artificial intelligence-based tools in children's play need to be developed and disseminated to activate the use of these tools. Teachers acknowledged the importance of utilizing artificial intelligence-based tools and believed that it is necessary for fostering the competencies demanded by future society. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the appropriate starting time and utilization period depending on teachers' experiences and training related to artificial intelligence-based tools. Secondly, teachers primarily gather information about the utilization of artificial intelligence-based tools through internet searches, but they have limited prior training experiences specifically related to the use of such tools. The experienced teacher training mainly focused on topics related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and future education, and the instructional methods were predominantly theoretical and lecture-based. Teachers perceived that the experienced teacher training was helpful in applying it to children's play. The need for teacher training on artificial intelligence-based tools was recognized to acquire programs and content for implementing the use of these tools in early childhood education. Teachers expressed a desire for teacher training on artificial intelligence-based tools that includes sharing of practical examples and activities in early childhood education utilizing these tools, focusing on the social-emotional domain and incorporating hands-on training with artificial intelligence-based tools. They also recognized that the activation of teacher training could be achieved through various types of educational support. Depending on teachers' experiences and training related to artificial intelligence-based tools, differences were noted in information gathering methods, desired educational content, and perceived needs for enhancing teacher training. Thirdly, there were significant positive correlations between the level of perceived necessity for utilizing artificial intelligence-based tools, the presence of teacher training experiences, the presence of teacher efficacy, and the level of perceived necessity for utilizing artificial intelligence-based tools with teacher efficacy. In conclusion, teachers have limited experience in teacher training related to the utilization of artificial intelligence-based tools. They perceive artificial intelligence as a technology that can coexist with humans. As a result, teachers tend to limit themselves to using familiar artificial intelligence-based tools in children's play, with a teacher-led approach. These perceptions and demands of teachers provide insights for the future development and dissemination of programs for utilizing artificial intelligence-based tools and teacher training programs.
