Spontaneously introduced with rapid evolving changes of domestic high
school education, the High School Credit System requires a new paradigm
and needs school space which prepares the educational environment of the
future, and it wants to improve their learning motivation by presenting
students with more flexible and tailored opportunities for their educational
experiences.
However, since the high school credit system has been introduced, the
educational space of high school faces other challenges and obstacles. In
order to operate the high school credit system, learning space that is
properly designed to match requirements of the system should be needed,
but current high school places cannot meet the requirements and it is
becoming difficult for the spots to conform to the new expectations, and
even various problems are emerging. Therefore, it is necessary to provide
systematic and profound responses.
According to the introduction of the high school credit system and
recognized clear needs of change, this study aims to provide specific
improvements for the school space in order to resolve the limitations of
current educational environments by examining problems of current
learning space and requirements of the high school credit system. This
study focuses on providing customized learning environments in which
there is learner-centered choice and concentration, breaking away from
conventional and uniform education spaces instead. It identifies the
changing high school plans based on the high school credit system and
examines the current status of high schools operating the high school
credit system. In addition, this study is to verify whether the new learning
space in a school found in the beginning stage of the changing process is
suitable for its practical operation of the high school credit system and
what effect the system has.
In order to achieve the purpose, this study proceeds as follows.
First, through a theoretical examination on the changes in domestic high
school curriculum and the high school credit system, this study suggests
limitations of current learning space that existing high school learning
space has, anticipated changes in the future, and necessity of
improvements.
Second, based on guidelines that the Ministry of Education provides in
order to introduce and operate the well-organized high school credit
system, this study deduces three requirements by analyzing directional
focuses of learning space pursued by the Ministry of Education.
Furthermore, this study extracts relevant supporting evidence for each
requirement in order to conduct objective analysis.
Third, selecting three winning entries from recent high school design
competitions that applied the high school credit system into learning space,
this study conducts comparison and analysis between the three entities and
the provided guidelines by identifying whether the three requirements are
well realized with each design, based on the guidelines, space program, and
design plan of each targeted subject. Through the process, this study
examines patterns of design changes and limitations, which have been
attempted into the learning spaces, and then it derives problems and improvements.
Fourth, based on the comparison and analysis, this study adds sufficient
verification on the analysis results by surveying teachers working in a
high school, operating the high school credit system actually. According to
this process, this study aims to find in-depth inspiration on the practical
problems and resolutions in the actual educational field.
In conclusion, this study verifies that after introducing the high school
credit system it is inevitable to change the learning space and most results
of the comparison analysis and teacher interviews are significantly
confirmed. However, this study observes remaining deficiencies in the
changing and planning process for the learning space as a part of the
preparation phase.
Therefore, this study analyzed requirements and problems systematically
on the learning space in a high school, introducing the high school credit
system. By presenting more realistic and practical improvements on them,
this study contributes to qualitative improvements for the educational
system and environments in domestic high school and this study could
enhance the efficient learning process for students.
