The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of academic self-efficacy in the relationship between Grit and academic achievement among adult learners participating in higher education. For this purpose, a survey was conducted, both online and offline, targeting 177 adult learners (126 males, 51 females) who participated in the Lifelong education at universities for the Future of Education(LiFE) at K University in Chungbuk, South Korea. In the study, descriptive statistics and frequency analysis were performed using SPSS Statistics 27 to confirm the normality of the sample. Cronbach's alpha was calculated to verify the reliability of each measurement tool, and Pearson correlation analysis was employed to understand the characteristics of key variables and background variables and to examine the relationships among variables. Regression analysis was conducted to identify the impact of Grit on academic achievement, the influence of Grit on academic self-efficacy, and the impact of academic self-efficacy on academic achievement. Additionally, to investigate the mediating effect of academic self-efficacy in the relationship between Grit and academic achievement, SPSS Process macro 4.2 Model 4 was utilized, and bootstrapping was employed to confirm the significance of the mediating effect. First, grit showed a positive correlation with academic self-efficacy and academic achievement. This indicates the necessity of considering both variables of grit and academic self-efficacy together when predicting academic achievement. Additionally, regression analysis was conducted to understand the relationship among grit, academic self-efficacy, and academic achievement. Grit significantly influenced academic self-efficacy and academic achievement, confirming that academic self-efficacy also positively affects academic achievement. Second, to examine the mediating effect of academic self-efficacy in the relationship between grit and academic achievement, SPSS Process macro 4.2 Model 4 was utilized, and bootstrapping was employed for significance testing, revealing a complete mediating effect. The results indicate that while grit may have a direct impact on academic achievement in a simple regression analysis, introducing academic self-efficacy as a mediating variable eliminates the direct influence of grit on academic achievement. This highlights the importance of considering the relationship between grit and academic self-efficacy when understanding the impact of grit on academic achievement among adult learners, deviating from previous research findings. The limitations of this study and suggestions for future research are as follows. First, generalizing the research results obtained from a single university may have limitations, and thus, expanding the scope of sampling is necessary to overcome the exploratory nature and limitations of a single university study. Second, it is unavoidable to consider the possibility of cognitive variables such as learning strategies, intelligence, and psychological factors that may negatively impact academic achievement, apart from Grit and academic self-efficacy. A comprehensive approach in future research is necessary to analyze the relationships among these diverse variables. Third, considering adult learners' employment status, there is a need for research targeting working professionals to develop Grit scales and competency development programs. Fourth, further analysis is required to explore the specific relationships among the sub-factors of Grit, such as interest maintenance, perseverance, task difficulty preference in academic self-efficacy, and the detailed components of confidence and self-regulation efficacy. Fifth, as this study relied on self-reported surveys for academic achievement, acknowledging the potential problems and errors associated with self-report measures is crucial. Future research should consider employing diverse data collection methods to address these limitations. Finally, a significant majority of participants in this study were male (71%). Grit was statistically higher in males compared to females (Park Chanho & Hwang Myunghwan, 2019). Considering the gender imbalance and its limitation in generalizing to the overall population of adult learners, future studies should aim for a balanced gender representation in the sample and collect diverse samples from various demographic groups.
