The purpose of this study was to analyze how academic stress and sociability influence problem behaviors in children. Modern meritocratic societies tend to place a lot of expectations on children and create a great deal of stress in their lives. Academic stress, in particular, is a chronic, ongoing state of stress that children typically experience in primary and secondary school, or other educational settings. In such cases, according to stress and coping theories, various types of problem behaviors can emerge as child’s coping strategies for stress. Problem behaviors such as depression, suicide, and violence in children have been reported to be serious both domestically and internationally. On the other hand, sociability have a positive effect on children's psychosocial adjustment, and the level of sociability can predict children's decision-making and behavioral outcomes. In order to achieve research purpose, following research questions were set up. First, does children's academic stress affect their problem behaviors? Second, does children's sociality affect their problem behaviors? This study used data from the Korean Child Panel Survey conducted by Child Care Policy Research Institute, and data on children from survey’s 12th wave (age 11) collected in 2019 were used for analysis. SPSS 23.0 software was used to conduct the analysis. Frequency analysis and descriptive statistics were conducted to identify general characteristics of study participants and level of each variable. Pearson's bivariate correlation analysis was conducted to determine the correlation between main variables. Multiple regression analysis was used to test the effect of children's academic stress on internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors and the effect of children's sociability on internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors. The results show that academic stress has a slight effect on internalizing problem behavior, while academic stress has no effect on externalizing problem behavior. These findings are different from those of previous domestic studies and may be explained by sample or methodological differences. On the other hand, sociality has a direct effect on both internalizing problem behavior and externalizing problem behavior. Consistent with these findings, higher levels of sociality may be associated with lower levels of internalizing and externalizing problem behaviors. These results may also suggest that programs aimed at preventing problem behavior in children may benefit from introducing interventions that improve social skills. In terms of control variables, higher academic performance is associated with lower internalizing problem behavior, boys are more likely to be at risk of externalizing problem behavior than girls, and the more friends a child has, the more likely they are to engage in externalizing problem behavior. Finally, children with higher academic performance are less likely to engage in externalizing problem behaviors than children with lower academic performance. Nevertheless, this study is limited in that it focuses on only three important proximal contextual variables: academic stress, socialization, and problem behaviors. Another limitation of this study is that it only analyzed the impact of academic stress without analyzing daily stress levels. Additionally, the lack of dimensionality of the academic stress construct might have had some effect on measurement results. Finally, a comparative analysis of the results of similar studies in different countries to determine whether there are cultural differences in problem behaviors and factors that influence problem behaviors in children would provide useful implications for child welfare practice.
