Kim(1987)은 학교생활적응을 학습자가 학교생활에서 접하게 되는 제반 교육적 여건을 자신의 욕구에 적절하게 조절하고, 학교에 관련된 제반 조건을 바르게 수용하고 학교 상황에서 유발하는 스트레스에 대처하는 시도의 정도라 정의하였다. 그 하위 요인으로 학교환경 적응, 학교 교사 적응, 학교수업 적응, 학교친구 적응, 학교생활 적응으로 구분 하였다. 즉 학생이 학교환경을 바르게 수용해서 적절하게 조절하고, 친구 및 교사와 원만한 인간관계를 형성하며, 수업시간에 자신의 욕구를 적절히 조절하여 전반에서 일어나는 일들을 올바르게 파악하면서, 학습자 개인에게 유발하는 여러 가지 스트레스를 잘 대처해 나가는 정도를 학교생활 적응이라 하였다.
애착이란 무엇인가? 애착은 한 개인이 살아가면서 평생 동안에 걸쳐 자신과 가까운 사람에 대해 느끼는 강한 감정적 유대관계를 뜻하는데(Bower, 1981), 학령기 아동에게 있어서는 많이 노출되는 관계인 부모, 교사, 또래가 애착 형성의 대상으로서 주목을 받을 수 있다. 특히 학령기 아동에게 부모, 교사, 또래 등 중요한 대상과 관계에서의 조화로움과 만족감은 아동의 정서와 인지, 대인관계 등 다양한 영역에 걸쳐 적응과 발달에 중요한 영향을 미치게 되며, 아동은 이들 관계에 따라 사회인으로서 자아개념과 학교생활적응에 영향을 받게 된다.
