Data were collected from March to June, 2013, from 243 elderly persons. Questionnaires were used in order to solicit information on self-transcendence, spiritual well-being, and death anxiety. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression were used in analysis of data. Results: Average scores were 2.96 for self-transcendence, 4.19 for spiritual well-being, and 3.08 for death anxiety. Statistically significant negative correlations were observed between self-transcendence and death anxiety, spiritual well-being and death anxiety. However, from the statistical point of view, significantly positive correlation was observed between self-transcendence and spiritual well-being.. Spiritual well-being, health status, and gender were significant predictors of self-transcendence. Conclusion: This study will provide basic information for use in development of a program to encourage a healthy lifestyle for elderly persons.

지금까지 자기초월에 대한 연구는 정서적 안녕과 삶의질 증진(Neill, 2002), 삶의 회복 및 삶의 목적추구 (Nygren et al,, 2005), 영적인 안녕(Thomas, Burton, Griffin & fitzpatrick, 2010)과 관계된 것이 대부분이며, 국내에서는 자기초월이 성공적인 노화의 중요 요인이라 제시한 Kim과 Kim (2011), Kim (2012)의 연구가 있고, 노인의 자기초월, 영적안녕, 죽음불안에 대한 연구는 이루어지지 않았다. 자기초월이 노년기 삶과 죽음의 과정에서 신체, 심리, 영적 안녕 증진을 위한 의미 있는 중요한 개념서 본 연구에서는 노인의 자기초월, 영적안녕, 죽음불안간의 관계가 어떠한지를 파악하고 자기초월에 미치는 요인이 무엇 인지 확인하여 노인의 건강증진을 위한 기초 자료를 마련하고자 시도하였다.
제안 방법
자발적으로 연구에 참여하기로 동의한 대상자에게 서면 동의서를 작성하고 자료 수집을 수행하였다. 자료수집은 사전에 설문 내용에 대하여 교육받은 6명의 연구보조자들이 설문지를 읽어주고 응답을 표기하는 방법으로 이루어졌다.
대상 데이터
본 연구 대상자는 일 대도시에 거주하는 노인 243명을 편의 표출하여, 본 연구의 취지를 이해하고 의사소통에 문제가 없으며 문자 해독이 가능한 노인으로 선정하였다. 본 연구의 표본 수는 G Power 프로그램에서 유의수준 .
데이터처리
∙대상자의 일반적 특성에 따른 자기초월, 영적안녕, 죽음불안은 t-test, ANOVA로 분석하였고 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있는 변수는 Scheffe test로 사후검정을 실시하였다.
∙대상자의 자기초월, 영적안녕, 죽음불안 간의 상관관계는 Pearson's correlation으로 분석하였다.
∙대상자의 자기초월에 영향을 미치는 요인 확인을 위하여 영적안녕, 죽음불안 및 일반적 특성 변수들을 단계별 다중회귀분석(stepwise multiple regression) 으로 분석하였다. 회귀분석을 위해 독립변수들 사이에 다중공선성 검정, 잔차분석을 실시하였으며 모두 만족되었다.

영적안녕은 인간의 영적 본성을 최대한으로 개발시키는 능력이며 시간과 공간을 초월하여 존재하는 절대자, 자신, 이웃, 환경과의 관계에서 조화된 삶을 영위하는 것으로(Burkhardt, 1989) 본 연구에서는 Paloutzian과 Ellison (1982)이 개발한 것을 Sung (1998)이 수정 보완한 도구를 사용하였다. 도구는 20문항이며 문항 평점은 1-6점으로 구성되었고 점수가 높을수록 영적안녕의 수준이 높은 것을 의미한다.
자기초월은 일생을 관대하게 살며 죽음을 건강하게 받아들이고 내적인 활동을 통해 자신을 확장시키고 자신의 과거 현재 미래를 통합시키는 것을 의미하는 것 (Reed, 1991)으로 본 연구에서는 Reed (1986)가 개발한 Self Transcendense Scale(STS)를 사용하였다. STS는 15문항이며 문항 평점은 1-4점으로 점수가 높을수록 자기초월의 정도가 높음을 의미한다.
죽음불안은 존재의 상실에서 오는 두려움, 죽어가는 과정에서 오는 두려움, 공포, 그리고 사후 결과에 대한 불안을 표현하는 심리적인 과정을 말하는 것으로 (Choi, 2007), Templer(1970)가 개발한 죽음불안 척도(Death Anxiety Scale, DAS)를 Ko, Choi, & Lee(2006)가 번역한 것을 사용하였다. 도구는 15문항이며 문항 평점은 1-5점으로 점수가 높을수록 죽음에 대한 불안의 수준이 높은 것을 의미한다.
