호스피스란 무엇인가? 최근 생명연장을 위한 무의미한 치료보다는 남은여생을 인간적인 품위를 유지하면서 편안하게 죽음을 맞이할 수 있도록 하는 호스피스가 재조명을 받으면서(Suh, Shin, & Hong, 2010), 말기암 환자가 호스피스를 선택하는 사례도 증가하고 있다. 이러한 현상은 호스피스를 받고 사망한 말기암 환자의 수가 2003년, 5.
말기암이란 어떤 상태인가? 8%가 암으로 사망하였다(Statistics Korea, 2013). 말기암은 여러 치료에도 불구하고 암이 계속 진행하고 악화되는 상태를 의미한다(Statistics Korea). 말기암 환자는 육체적, 정신적, 영적, 경제적, 사회적, 문화적 영역 등 모든 면에 걸쳐서 심각한 문제에 직면하게 되는데 치료중심의 의료체계에서는 이 환자들의 복합적인 문제를 해결하기 위한 체계적이고도 실제적인 접근이 어렵다(Hong, 2004).
