LBS가 사용되는 영역은 무엇인가? LBS는 GPS(Global Positioning System)나 이동통신망 등을 통해 얻은 위치정보를 활용하여 이용자에게 유용한 기능을 제공하는 서비스를 통칭 하는 개념이다(Kwon and Lee, 2009). 사용자 위치, 시간 정보를 이용하여 날씨, 지도 등의 정보서비스, Web, 이메일 서비스, 금융 서비스, M-커머스, 오락, 모바일 쿠폰 서비스 등 영역은 무궁무진하다(Han, 2012). LBS는 단순 위치확인 서비스, 사용자간 커뮤니케이션 위치 기반 커뮤니티(Comm unity) 서비스, 그리고 오프라인 비즈니스의 위치기반 커머스 서비스로 구분할 수 있다.
