이 연구는 국내 도서관계에서 현재 사용하고 있는 OPAC이 어린이의 보편적 특성은 물론이고 디지털 키즈(digital kids)의 정보행태를 제대로 반영하지 못하고 있다는 문제의식에서 출발하였다. 이러한 문제의식을 유지하면서 이 연구에서는 철저히 어린이의 관점에서 현행 OPAC의 한계점을 도출하고 개선방안을 제시하고자 하였다. 특히 디지털 키즈가 도서관에서 자료를 탐색하는 과정과 OPAC을 검색하는 과정에서 드러내 보이는 행태적 특징을 세밀하게 관찰하면서, 현행 OPAC의 한계점을 찾아내고 새로운 OPAC의 개발을 제안하였다. 논의에 필요한 데이터는 초등학교 4-6학년 545명을 대상으로 한 설문조사, 설문조사 참여자들 중에서 선정한 8명과의 심층면담, 그리고 6개 도서관에서 진행했던 어린이들의 탐색과정에 대한 참여관찰 등을 통해 수집하였다.

| 어린이들이 OPAC을 이용하는데 어려움을 겪는 이유는? | 국외의 경우 1990년대 초반부터 어린이의 정보행태에 대해 세밀하게 연구하고, 그러한 결과를 바탕으로 어린이에게 적합한 OPAC을 개발하는데 상당한 관심을 보여 왔다. 먼저, 어린이들은 명료한 정보요구를 가지고 있지 않으며, 정보요구를 말이나 글로 표현하는데 특히 어려움을 느끼고 있으며, 찾고자 하는 자료의 50%는 100개 정도의 간단한 토픽에 불과하다는 등 어린이의 정보행태를 실증적으로 규명하였다(Külper & Schulz1997, 207). 그리고 이러한 결과에 근거하여 기존의 OPAC은 어린이들의 자료탐색을 지원하는 기초도구로 인지되고 기능하기에 근본적인 결함을 안고 있다고 결론 내리고, 어린이의 요구와 인지능력, 탐색행태에 적합한 ‘새로운’ 형태의 OPAC을 개발하고자 노력하였다(Hirsh 1997 ; Borgman 1996 ; Cooper 2002). |
