우리나라는 어떻게 다문화 사회로 바뀌고 있는가? 오늘날 한국의 다문화 사회 진입은 매우 빠르게 진행되고 있다. 1980년대 후반부터 특정 종교의 주도로 일본여성과 한국남성의 국제결혼이 많아지기 시작하였고(Statistics Korea, 2014), 1992년 중국과 수교 한 뒤 조선족 여성과 농촌 남성의 국제결혼이 크게 증가하였다(E. Lee & M. Jun, 2013). 이후 지방자치단체의 적극적인 ‘농어촌 총각 장가보내기’ 사업의 결과, 결혼이주여성의 유입이 본격화되었고 현재도 활발히 추진되고 있다(Joongboo Daily, 2014).
