척수손상은 어떠한 부정적인 정서를 유발하는가? 또한 개인의 삶은 물론 사회 전반에 영향을 미치며, 운동신경 및 감각신경의 마비, 대소변 기능의 장애, 호흡기능의 장애, 성기능의 장애 등 다양한 신체적 장애를 발생시킨다. 그리고 척수손상은 자기 개념의 혼란, 분노와 수치감, 무력감, 죄책감, 불안, 우울과 같은 부정적인 정서를 유발하게 된다[4]. 시간이 지남에 따라 사회적 접촉의 감소로 인해 점차 사회에서 고립되고 사회적 역할을 상실하게 된다.
현대에 척수손상인의 수가 점점 증가하는 추세인 이유는? 현대는 급속도의 산업화와 도시화에 따른 교통사고 및 산업재해와 추락사고의 증가로 척수손상인의 수는 점점 증가하고 있는 추세에 있다[1]. 2012년 Korea Spinal Cord Injury Association에 의하면[2], 국내 척수손상인은 약 60,000명 이상으로 추정하고 있으며, 원인은 주로 외상성인 것으로 나타났다[1].
