한국 내 외국인 환자 수가 증가함에 따라, 실제적인 간호경험에 대한 연구를 통해 외국인 환자의 간호의 질을 관리하고 향상시키는 것이 필수적이다. 본 연구는 비영어권 외국인 입원환자를 돌보는 간호사의 경험을 이해하고 설명하기 위해 수행된 질적 연구이다. 본 연구의 참여자는 2년 이상의 병원임상경력을 가진 간호사 10명을 대상으로 하였다. 자료수집은 개인 심층면담을 통해 이루어졌으며, 수집된 자료는 질적내용분석 방법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 비영어권 외국인 입원환자를 돌보는 간호사의 경험은 '문화적 차이 인식', '진심을 통한 신뢰관계 형성', '추가적인 간호업무', '진정한 간호로의 몰입', '아쉬움과 후련함'으로 총 5개의 주제모음이 도출되었다. 본 연구 결과는 비영어권 외국인 환자를 돌보는 간호사의 경험에 대한 이해를 제공하였으며, 간호사들이 비영어권 외국인 환자를 돌보면서 언어적 의사소통의 어려움과 문화적 차이에도 불구하고 진정한 간호를 위해 적극적인 전략들을 사용하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 한편, 통역 서비스 등의 인적 자원이나 영문 이외의 다양한 언어로 된 진료 안내서와 교육 자료 등의 시스템적인 자원 부족이 있었으므로 이를 해결하기 위한 제도적 노력과 자원이 뒷받침되어야 하겠다.

With a rapidly increasing number of foreign patients in Korea, it is necessary to manage and enhance the quality of nursing care for foreign inpatients through the promotion of studies on practical nursing care experience. This study is a qualitative study conducted to understand and describe the care experiences of nurses responsible for non-English speaking foreign inpatients. There were 10 nurses with a clinical career of more than two years included in this study for analysis. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Five themes emerged from the analysis. 'Aware of cultural differences', 'establish trusting relationships through all my heart', 'additional nursing task', 'empathy for genuine nursing', 'sorriness and relieved'. The results of this study provided the understanding on the experiences of nurses, who do not speak English, but still responsible for providing care to foreign inpatients. Despite the language barrier, cultural differences, and work overload, nurses caring for foreign patients struggled with authenticity in nursing. On the other hand, as there was a lack of system resources, such as manuals and training materials in various languages other than English, institutions should put forth greater effort and resources to be prepared to care for foreign inpatients.

	다양한 문화적, 사회적 배경을 가진 의료이용자가 증가함에 따라 간호사는 어떤 역할을 수행해야 하는가?	이렇듯 다양한 문화적, 사회적 배경을 가진 의료이용자가 증가함에 따라 국내 의료기관에서는 국제진료센터를 운영하고 외국인 환자 전담인력을 배치하는 등 외국인 환자 응대서비스를 위한 시스템을 구축하고 있다[3]. 특히 간호사는 외국인 환자의 의료서비스 욕구를 충족시키는 데 있어 중요한 전문 의료 인력으로 간호수행, 진료지원, 교육 및 상담 등의 포괄적인 역할을 수행해야 하며, 이를 위해 의사소통 기술, 신뢰관계 형성 기술, 다양한 문화에 대한 지식과 문화적 배경과 차이에 대한 이해 등의 국제간호역량이 요구된다[4]. 국내 의료기관에서는 외국인 전담간호사나 외국인 전담코디네이터 등의 이름으로 관련 업무를 수행하고 있지만 업무에 대한 명확한 기준이나 지침이 부족하고[5,6], 병원마다 외국인 전담 간호사의 역할 범위가 각기 다르며, 업무 범위 또한 제한적이어서 간호 서비스의 질적 수준을 향상시키기 위한 방안의 모색이 필요한 시점이다.
	비영어권 외국인 입원환자를 돌보는 간호사의 경험이 어떠한 주제로 도출되었는가?	자료수집은 개인 심층면담을 통해 이루어졌으며, 수집된 자료는 질적내용분석 방법을 사용하여 분석하였다. 분석결과 비영어권 외국인 입원환자를 돌보는 간호사의 경험은 '문화적 차이 인식', '진심을 통한 신뢰관계 형성', '추가적인 간호업무', '진정한 간호로의 몰입', '아쉬움과 후련함'으로 총 5개의 주제모음이 도출되었다. 본 연구 결과는 비영어권 외국인 환자를 돌보는 간호사의 경험에 대한 이해를 제공하였으며, 간호사들이 비영어권 외국인 환자를 돌보면서 언어적 의사소통의 어려움과 문화적 차이에도 불구하고 진정한 간호를 위해 적극적인 전략들을 사용하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
