Lee & Bauer가 시행한 면접조사에서 한국 사회에서 조부모의 손자녀 돌봄이 보편화된 이유는 무엇으로 나타났는가? 이렇듯 한국 사회에서 조부모의 손자녀 돌봄이 보편화된 이유는 무엇일까. Lee & Bauer(2013)는 우리나라의 자녀를 맡기는 취업주부와 손자녀를 돌보는 조모를 대상으로 면접조사를 시행한 결과, 조부모의 손자녀 돌봄은 한국 사회의 전통적인 가족주의(familism)에서 비롯되며 자녀의 성공을 위하여 그들의 양육 부담을 덜어줌으로써 자녀의 경력 개발 및 웰빙, 부모로서의 의무감으로 양육 을 시작하게 된다고 하였으며, 성인 자녀 입장에 서는 부모로부터 재정적, 양육 지원 기대 등 가족 의 양육에 대한 신뢰, 편의성 등에서 조부모에게 양육을 위탁하게 된다고 보고한 바 있다. 2015년 조부모와 성인 자녀를 대상으로 한 육아정책연구 소의 전국 설문조사에서도 비슷한 응답을 보였는 데, 성인 자녀들은 직장생활 혹은 학업을 계속하 고 싶어 조부모에 자녀를 위탁하고, 조부모 입장 에서도 본인 스스로 돌봄을 자원하기 보다는 대 부분 자녀의 부탁을 거절할 수 없어서, 자녀가 마 음 놓고 직장생활이나 학업을 계속할 수 있도록 도와주고 싶어 손자녀 양육을 하게 된다고 보고 하였다(이윤진 권미경 김승진, 2015).
손자녀 돌봄은 조부모에게 어떠한 영향을 미칠 수 있는가? 고령자의 손자녀 돌봄 노동은 노 인의 건강에 영향을 미칠 가능성이 크다. 손자녀 돌봄은 삶의 활력과 보람을 제공하여 건강에 긍정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있지만 고령으로 노화되 어 가는 조부모의 건강에 신체적, 정신적인 부담 이 되어 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수도 있다. 노인의 건강은 노화로 인하여 나이가 들수록 쇠퇴하게 되나, 이러한 쇠퇴가 돌봄으로 가속화 되는지, 아 니면 쇠퇴가 지연되는지는 기존의 실증 연구에서 도 명확히 밝혀져 있지 않다.
