중년기는 어떤 위협을 맞을 수 있는가? 이런 측면에서 중년기는 태내기, 영아기, 유아동기 및 청소년기, 성인 전기를 지난 뒤 맞이하게 되는 시점으로 노년기를 바로 앞에 두고 있는 인생의 중후반기라고 할 수 있다. 따라서 신체 생리적인 측면에서 건강의 위협뿐만 아니라 여러 측면에서 위기를 맞을 수 있다. 하지만 모든 연구자들이 중년기를 위기의 시기로만 본 것은 아니다.
