Purpose: The study was conducted to investigate the effects of knowledge and attitude towards dementia on social distance from senile dementia among university students. Methods: The study was a descriptive study based on 235 university students. Data were collected from September 1 to 15, 2017 using a structured self-report questionnaire. Dementia knowledge, dementia attitude, and social distance from senile dementia were measured. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and hierarchical multiple regression. Results: After adjusting for the general and dementia-related characteristics of the participants, the significant predictors of social distance from senile dementia among university students were dementia attitude. Moreover, knowledge and attitude towards dementia explained 27.8% of the variance in social distance from senile dementia among university students. Conclusion: The results indicate that educators need to make efforts to improve dementia attitude and to develop plans to increase dementia knowledge in order to reduce university students' prejudice against senile dementia.

대상 데이터

본 연구의 대상자는 C시 소재한 H대학에 재학 중인학생으로 본 연구의 목적과 취지를 이해하고 자발적으로 연구 참여에 서면 동의한 자들이다.

Cho 등(2008)이 개발하고 SunWoo (2014)가 사용한 치매지식 측정도구를 사용하였다. 이 도구는 치매의원인, 역학 및 제도, 증상 및 진단, 치료 및 예방에 관한지식을 묻는 15문항으로 구성되어 있다.
Choi와 Park (2004)이 대학생을 대상으로 개발한정신장애인에 대한 사회적 거리감 측정도구의 하위영역중 사회적 의지 및 접촉과 관련된 문항들을 본 연구의 목적과 대상자에 부합하도록 수정 보완하여 사용하였다.
Song (2002)이 개발하고 Lee, Woo, Kim, Lee와Im (2009)이 사용한 치매 태도 측정도구를 사용하였다. 이 도구는 치매에 대해 각 개인이 가지는 좋고 나쁜감정과 행동적 경향성을 확인하는 15문항으로 구성된4점 Likert 척도이다(1=전혀 그렇지 않다, 4=매우그렇다).

성능/효과

Park 등(2015)의 연구에서는 연구대상자가 간호대학생이었고, Cho (2016)의 연구에서는 본 연구보다는 비율이 낮았지만 건강과 관련이 적은 인문사회대 전공의 대학생이 일부 있었다. 본 연구 결과 건강관련 전공 대학생들의 치매지식점수가 건강과 관련이 적은 전공 대학생들의 치매 지식 점수보다 높게 나타났는데, 건강관련 전공 대학생들에서 치매 지식 점수가 그렇지 않은 다른 대학생들보다는 높음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 건강과 관련성이 적은 전공 대학생들은 치매에 대한 적절한 교육이나 정보를 접할 기회가 없거나 적었기 때문인 것으로 파악된다.
본 연구에서는 대학생의 치매노인에 대한 사회적 거리감에 종교, 치매노인과의 접촉 정도, 이전 자원봉사경험, 조기치매예방에 대한 관심정도를 비롯하여 치매 지식 및 태도가 주요 예측요인으로 작용하고 있음을 확인하였다. 따라서 사회적 취약계층이 될 수 있는 치매 노인에 대한 사회적 거리감을 줄여 사회 내로 수용하여 잘 돌볼 수 있도록 치매에 대한 정확한 지식과 정보를 제공하고 이를 통해 치매에 대한 긍정적인 태도와 인식을 가질 수 있도록 하는 교육의 기회가 제공되어야 하리라 본다.

후속연구

또한 치매지식에 대한 문항 중 치매의 예방 및 치료에 관련된문항, 예를 들어 치매노인을 위한 환경의 변화부분이나 약물로 치매 완치 가능성과 같은 문항에서는 대상자들의 건강관련 전공유무에 관계없이 모두 오답률이 높게 나타났다. 그러므로 치매관련 지식 내용 중 모호하거나 오해의 소지가 있는 내용에 대해서는 사전에 파악이 필요하다고 보며, 이를 토대로 치매에 대한 정확한 지식과 정보를 제공해주는 교육이 필요하다고 하겠다.
본 연구에서는 대학생의 치매노인에 대한 사회적 거리감에 종교, 치매노인과의 접촉 정도, 이전 자원봉사경험, 조기치매예방에 대한 관심정도를 비롯하여 치매 지식 및 태도가 주요 예측요인으로 작용하고 있음을 확인하였다. 따라서 사회적 취약계층이 될 수 있는 치매 노인에 대한 사회적 거리감을 줄여 사회 내로 수용하여 잘 돌볼 수 있도록 치매에 대한 정확한 지식과 정보를 제공하고 이를 통해 치매에 대한 긍정적인 태도와 인식을 가질 수 있도록 하는 교육의 기회가 제공되어야 하리라 본다.
