The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of empathy in relation to contact experience of the elderly and their knowledge level of ageing. For this study data was collected from 20th Dec. to 30th of Dec. 2018 355 university students from D university in J. province were surveyed. Data was analysis by using reliability test, correlation analysis, hierarchical multiful regression analysis. The statistical significance of the mediating effects was confirmed by Sobel's verification. The results of the analysis showed that the partial mediation effect of empathy was verified with regard to the relationship between elderly contact experience and discrimination of elderly people. In addition, the partial mediation effect of empathy was verified between level of aging knowledge and the perception of elderly discrimination. The results of this study confirmed the necessity of developing practical education and training programs to improve the level of aging knowledge and to increase contact experience with elderly people. There is also a need to enhance empathy in order to improve the awareness of discrimination against elderly people in health and welfare departments among university students.

또한 노화지식은 노인에 대한 태도에 가장 큰 영향요인이며[44], 노화지식수준이 높을수록 노인차별 수준은 낮아진다는 결과를 보고하였다[45]. 따라서 본 연구에서는 선행연구결과들을 바탕으로 노화지식을 대학생의 노인차별인식의 영향요인으로 지목하였다.
본 연구의 목적은 대학생들의 노인차별인식, 노인접촉경험, 노화지식 및 공감능력수준을 알아보고, 대학생의 노인접촉경험과 노화지식이 노인차별인식에 영향을 미치는 정도를 파악하여 이들 간의 영향관계에서 공감능력의 매개효과를 검정하는 데 있다.
본 연구의 의의는 대학생의 노인차별인식 영향 요인을 다각적 측면에서 탐색하였고, 공감능력의 매개효과를 확인하여 노인차별에 대한 예방교육을 위해 대학생의 공감능력 향상 교육의 필요성을 제시하였다는 것이다.
국내 연구에서도 간호 대학생들의 노인에 대한 공감능력과 노인에 대한 태도는 정적 상관관계가 나타났으며[39], 간호사나 사회복지분야 전공자의 공감능력이 높을수록 노인에 대한 태도도 긍정적인 것으로 나타났다[55, 56]. 이와 같이 공감능력이 노인차별인식 영향요인으로 중요성이 시사되었다는 점에 근거하여 본연구에서는 노인에 대한 접촉경험과 노화지식을 선행변수로 설정함과 동시에 공감능력을 중간적 변수로 설정하여 각 변수들이 서로 어떠한 영향 관계를 가지는지를 규명하고자 한다.
이처럼 대학생들의 노인접촉경험과 노화지식이 노인차별인식에 영향을 미치는 관계에서 공감능력의 부분매개효과가 검증되었음으로 노인접촉경험과 노화지식을 확장시키고 공감능력을 배양하기 위해서 다음과 같은 제언을 하고자 한다.
공감능력을 선행변수나 결과변수로 상정하고 진행하였던 단선적 선행연구들은 많았으나, 본 연구처럼 대학생을 대상으로 하여 노인접촉경험과 노화지식이 노인에 대한 차별인식에 영향을 주는 관계 속에서 공감능력의 매개효과를 검증했던 연구는 찾아보기가 어려웠다. 특히, 본 연구는 기존의 선행연구들이 조명하지 않았던 연구모형을 제시하여 이미 고령사회로 진입한 우리의 현실에서 대학생의 노인차별인식을 감소시키고 세대 간 통합에 대한 실천적 제안과 세대갈등 해소의 기초자료를 제공하고자 한다.

제안 방법

이처럼 공감능력의 조절이나 매개역할은 어떤 연구모형이나 맥락에 투입되는가에 따라 상이하게 나타나고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 노인접촉경험과 노화지식이 노인에 대한 긍정적 태도 형성에 영향을 준다는 선행연구 결과들에[49, 64, 85] 근거하여 노화지식과 노인접촉경험을 독립변수로 설정하고 노인차별인식을 종속변수로 설정하여 독립변수들의 긍정적인 영향력을 예측하였으며, 공감능력을 매개변수로 설정하였다.
본 연구에서는 대학생들의 노화지식과 노인접촉경험이 노인차별인식에 미치는 영향을 확인하고, 이들 의 영향관계에서 공감능력의 매개효과를 검정하기 위해 Fig.1과 같이 연구모형을 각각 구성하였다.

대상 데이터

본 연구는 J도에 소재한 4년제 대학교의 재학생 355명을 대상으로 유의표집하였다. 조사기간은 2018년 12월 20일부터 30일까지 였으며, 연구대상자들을 윤리적으로 보호하기 위해 동신대학교 생명윤리위원회의 승인절차를 거쳤다.

노인접촉경험과 노인차별인식의 관계에서 공감능력이 갖는 매개효과의 유의성을 검정하기 위해 Sobel의 검증을 실시하였고, 그 결과는 Table 4와 같다. Sobel 검증은 95% 유의수준에서 |Z|>1.

이론/모형

본 연구에서 대학생들의 공감능력을 측정하기 위해 Baren과 Wheelwright가 개발하고[94] Wakabayashi 등이 수정하여 사용했던[95] 22개 문항을 토대로, 여지영이 11개 문항의 단일구조로 구성한[96] 한국판 단축공감능력척도를 사용하였다. 구체적으로 보면, ‘나는 누군가가 자신의 진짜 감정을 숨기고 있는지를 쉽게 알 수 있다’, ‘나는 다른 사람이 무엇을 이야기하고자 하는지 쉽게 알아차릴 수 있다’ 등의 문항이 있다.
본 연구에서 대학생들의 노인접촉경험을 측정하기 위해 Hutchison 등의 척도[92]를 기반으로 김지연 등이 재편한[93] 10개 문항을 사용하였다. 이 척도는 노인과의 접촉 빈도 4개 문항과 접촉의 질 6개 문항으로 구성되어 있으며, ‘나는 살아오면서 삶의 많은 영역에서 노인들과 교류했다’, ‘노인과 함께 했던 경험은 즐거웠다’, ‘노인과의 갈등으로 힘든 일을 경험한 적이 있다’ 등이 있다.
본 연구에서 대학생의 노인차별인식을 측정하기 위하여 Fraboni 등이 개발한 노인차별 척도(Fraboni Scale of Ageism; FSA)를 사용하였다[90]. 이 척도는 노인에 대한 적대적 언어, 회피, 차별의 3개 하위요인 29개 문항으로 구성되어 있다.
본 연구에서는 대학생들의 노화지식을 측정하기 위해 Palmore가 개발한 ‘Facts On Aging Quiz’를 사용하였다[91].

성능/효과

노화지식과 노인차별인식의 관계에서 공감능력이 갖는 매개효과의 유의성을 검정하기 위해 Sobel 검증을 수행한 결과, Z값이 –2.170(p<.05)으로 나타남에 따라 매개효과의 유의성이 검정되었다(Table 6. 참조).
다음으로 독립변수가 매개변수에 미치는 영향을 분석한 2단계의 결과를 보면, 노인접촉경험이 공감능력에 미치는 영향력도 유의미한 것으로 나타났다(β=-.201, p<.05)(가설2 채택).
주요변수들 간 전반적 관계를 파악하기 위해 Pearson 적률상관관계를 분석한 결과는 Table 2와 같다. 대학생들의 노인차별인식과 공감능력, 노화지식과 노인접촉경험은 서로 정(+)의 관계를 보였고, 변수들 간 그 외의 관계에서는 모두 부(-)의 관계가 나타났다. 또한 변수들 간 다중공선성으로 인한 결과의 왜곡을 가져올 수 있는 상관관계는 발생하지 않았다.
또한 본 연구에서는 공감능력의 부분매개효과가 검증되었다. 이는 간호사 및 간호조무사의 공감능력이 차별인식과의 부적상관관계가 있으며[102], 이들의 공감능력이 치매노인환자에 대한 긍정적 태도 형성에 영향력이 있음을 검정한 선행연구를[83] 지지하고 있다.
마지막 3단계에서는 공감능력이 노인차별에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다(β=.198, p<.05).
본 연구 대상자들의 성별을 보면 여학생 59%, 남학생 41%로 나타났다. 학년별로는 1학년 28.
6.1 결론요약 및 연구함의

연구결과를 요약해보면, 먼저 대학생의 노인차별인식에 대해 공감능력과 노화에 대한 지식, 그리고 노인접촉경험이 주요 영향요인이라는 점이 확인되었다. 이 결과는 노화지식과 노인접촉경험이 노인에 대한 긍정적인 태도형성에 영향을 준다는 선행연구의 결과들을 지지한다[49, 64, 85].
한국대학생과 일본대학생을 비교한 연구에서는[38] 한국 대학생의 노인차별인식이 일본 대학생보다 더 부정적이었고 노인에 대한 지식수준은 더 낮았으며, 노화불안은 더 높게 나타났다. 이 연구에서 양국 대학생들 모두 노인에 대한 지식이 적을수록 노인차별인식이 더 높게 나타났다. 이외에도 대학생을 대상으로 노인에 대한 이미지, 지식, 고정관념, 인식의 상관관계를 밝힌 연구[72], 간호사와 간호학생의 노인에 대한 지식과 태도의 관련성을 다룬 연구[43] 등 상당수의 선행연구들 이 노인이나 노화에 대한 지식수준과 노인차별인식이나 노인차별태도의 상관성을 시사하였다.
점수가 높을수록 노인차별인식 수준이 높음을 의미하며, 본 연구에서의 신뢰도는 Cronbach’s α=.77로 나타났다.

후속연구

그러나 본 연구는 일부지역의 대학생을 대상으로 편의표집했으므로 연구결과를 일반화하는 데에 한계가 있다. 또한 대학생의 주관적 노인차별인식조사에 국한되어 사회의 제도적 차별과 같은 거시적 관점에서의 분석이 미흡한 점 등이 연구의 한계라 할 수 있다.
넷째, 노인복지기관이나 사회복지관련 실무영역에서는 지역사회 대학생이나 자원봉사자들을 대상으로 노인에 대한 긍정적 인식을 확장하도록 하는 교육프로그램이 시행되어야 한다. 실제로 김수영 등의 세대교육프로그램[67]이나 국외의 세대 간 공동주거정책[99] 등은 젊은 세대와 노인의 교류를 통해 세대 간 통합과 연대를 이끌어내는 데 효과가 있다고 검증된 프로그램들이다.
둘째, 공감능력의 매개효과가 확인되었으므로, 대학생의 노인에 대한 공감능력을 증진시키기 위한 교육 및 훈련이 필요하다. 공감능력은 훈련을 통해 가능한 인간관계기술로 알려져 왔기 때문에[104] 노인에 대한 직접 또는 간접경험을 통해 공감능력을 향상시킬 수 있는 다양한 활동과 프로그램 개발이 필요하다.
따라서 향후 연구에서는 전국 대학생으로 조사 대상을 확대하여 연구의 일반성을 확보할 필요가 있다. 또한, 질적 연구를 통해 노인차별인식 요인을 보다 심층적으로 이해하여 실질적인 노인차별인식 예방 프로그램 개발에 필요한 연구가 이루어져야 한다.

셋째, 대학생에게 노인과 접촉할 수 있는 시간과 질을 증진시킬 수 있는 구체적인 프로그램 개발이 요구된다. 선행연구에 따르면 노인과의 질적 접촉을 통한 관계형성이 노인에 대한 태도변화에 기여한다고 하였으므로[98], 효과적이고 실현가능한 프로그램 개발이 절실하다.
