21세기에 들어서서 영성은 어떻게 정의되는가? 국내에서 가장 많이 사용되고 있는 Spirituality Assessment Scale (SAS)를 개발한 Howden [12]은 영성을 삶의 의미와 목적, 내적 자 원, 상호관계성, 초월성을 통합함으로써 나타나는 존재의 차원으로 정의하였다. 반면에 21세기에 들어서서 영성은 “인간 삶의 핵심적 원 동력으로 생명의 생기를 불어 넣어주며 사랑, 열정, 영감으로 표현되 어 세상과 사람들을 동기화시키고 이를 연결시켜 주는 것”으로 정의 되기도 한다[13]. 그런데 Rodgers [14]에 의하면 개념은 하나의 특정 맥락과 시간의 흐름 안에서 계속적인 발달 과정을 거치면서 사용되 는 의미가 점차적으로 모호해지기거나 역사적 사건에 영향을 받아 변형된다.
영성사정도구(N-SAS)의 수직적 차원과 수평적 차원을 측정하는 문항은 어떻게 구성되었는가? 영성사정도구(N-SAS)는 수직적 차원과 수평적 차원의 2 개 차원을 지닌 다차원적 영성 개념을 측정하는 것으로 4개 속성의 44개 문항으로 구성되었다. 수직적 차원은 절대자(신)와 관계 속성 (19개 문항), 수평적 차원은 자기초월 속성(10개 문항), 삶의 의미와 자아통합 속성(10개 문항), 타인·이웃·자연과 관계 속성(5개 문항)으 로 확정하였다. 측정은 ‘모르겠다’는 0점, ‘전혀 그렇지 않다’ 1점, ‘그 렇지 않다’ 2점, ‘그렇다’ 3점, ‘매우 그렇다’ 4점의 5점 Likert 척도로 하였다.
