본 연구는 유독 와편모조류 Alexandrium pacificum의 조기 감지 여부를 조사하기 위해 홀 소자 센서(Hall element sensor)를 활용하여 진주담치(Mytilus edulis)와 참굴(Crassostrea gigas)의 패각운동(shell valve movements, SVMs) 변화를 살펴보았다. 무독성 조류 Isochrysis galbana에 대한 SVMs는 M. edulis와 C. gigas에서 모두 증감이 관찰되지 않았다. 하지만 마비성 패독(paralytic shellfish poisoning, PSP)을 유발하는 A. pacificum에 노출됨에 따라 M. edulis와 C. gigas는 폭로 전후로 약 12시간 동안 평균 SVMs가 각각 1.25 times/hr에서 2.13 times/hr 그리고 2.23 times/hr에서 8.91 times/hr로 증가하였다. M. edulis는 A. pacificum에 노출되고 1시간 이내에 SVMs가 증가한 뒤 점차 감소한 추세를 보였지만, C. gigas는 노출 후 4시간까지도 높은 SVMs를 보여, C. gigas가 M. edulis보다 유독 와편모조류에 대한 민감성이 높은 것으로 보였다. 따라서 이러한 결과들은 유독 와편모조류 A. pacificum의 출현 시 조기 감지를 할 수 있는 생물모니터링 시스템 체계 구축에 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
