This study examines the mediating effect of self-esteem in the path between parental attachment and career barriers for out-of-school youth and proposes measures to reduce the level of career barriers for out-of-school youth. As analysis data, we used data from the 5th year of the panel survey of school dropout youth conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, and used 318 out-of-school youth for analysis. As a result of analysis using the statistical programs SPSS 23.0 and Amos 23.0 version, the mediating effect of self-esteem was confirmed in the path between emotional support, a subfactor of parental attachment, and all subfactors of career barriers. These results suggest that multifaceted efforts are needed to improve parental attachment (emotional support, economic support) and self-esteem, which influence the level of career barriers for out-of-school youth. Accordingly, based on the results of this study, practical measures were specifically presented to educate parents of out-of-school youth and improve their self-esteem.

정서적 지지(Emotional support)를 많이 받을수록 진로 장벽을 낮게 지각하고, 이런 정서적 지지와 경제적 지지(Economic support)를 높게 인식할수록 진로 장벽에 대한 대처 효능감이 높고 낮은 진로 장벽을 나타내 부모의 정서적 지지와 경제적 지지의 긍정적 영향을 확인할 수 있어[18], 자녀의 학교생활이나 진로, 학업 문제에 적지 않은 영향을 미치는 부모의 긍정적 양육 태도인 부모 애착(Parental attachment)은 학교 밖 청소년의 자아존중감이나 진로 장벽 문제 등에도 적지 않은 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 부모 애착의 하위 요인으로 정서적 지지와 경제적 지지로 하여 진로 장벽에 미치는 영향을 살펴보고자 한다.

가설 설정

둘째, 부모 애착(정서적 지지, 경제적 지지)은 자아존중감을 매개로 하여 학교 밖 청소년의 진로 장벽에 영향을 미칠 것이다.
셋째, 부모 애착(정서적 지지, 경제적 지지)과 학교 밖 청소년의 진로 장벽 간의 경로에서 성별에 따른 차이가 있을 것이다.

대상 데이터

본 연구에서도 9세~24세의 자발적 또는 비자발적으로 제도권 안의 정규학교에 소속되지 않은 청소년을 ‘학교 밖 청소년’으로 정의한다.
분석 자료는 한국청소년정책연구원에서 수행한 「학업 중단 청소년 패널조사」 5차 연도 데이터를 활용하여, 학교 밖 청소년 318명을 분석에 활용하였다. 학교 밖 청소년의 부모 애착과 진로 장벽 간의 관계를 알아보기 위해 독립변수로 부모 애착(정서적 지지, 경제적 지지)을 매개변수로 자아존중감, 종속변수로 진로 장벽(정보 부족, 미래 불안, 경제적 어려움)을 설정하였다.

데이터처리

성별에 따른 조절 효과를 확인하기 위해 다중집단분석을 실시하였다. 측정 동질성 검정과 형태 동질성 검증을 한 결과 TLI와 CFI 등 증분 적합 지수가 0.
0 version을 활용하여 다음과 같이 분석을 수행하였다. 첫째, 일반적 특성 파악을 위해 기술통계 분석, 신뢰도 분석 등을 통하여 주요 변수들의 정규성을 확인하였으며, 둘째, 확인적 요인분석으로 잠재 변수에 대한 측정변수의 설명력을 파악하였다. 셋째, AMOS를 활용하여 구조방정식 분석을 통하여 변수 간 경로 유의도와 간접 효과 및 직접 효과와 총 효과를 살펴보았다.
측정 모형의 구성개념 내적 일치도와 집중 타당성을 확인하기 위해 Cronbach’a와 개념 신뢰도(CR) 및 평균분산 추출 값(AVE)을 구하였다

이론/모형

자아존중감 문항은 최인재 외(2012)의 자아존중감 문항을 사용하였으며 총 5문항으로 이루어졌다. 4점 Likert 척도로 점수가 높을수록 자아존중감이 높다는 것을 의미한다.
학교 밖 청소년 패널 5차 연도 진로 장벽 문항은 김은영(2000)[28]이 개발한 것을 수정 개발한 척도로 ‘진로 정보 부족’, ‘미래 불안’, ‘경제적 어려움’의 3개 영역 총 13개 문항으로 이루어졌다

성능/효과

구체적으로 성별에 따라 이들 경로에 어느 정도의 영향을 미치고 있는지 살핀 결과 제약 6경로의 경제적 지지가 진로 장벽 하위 요인 중 정보 부족에 미치는 영향은 남성이 표준화계수가 0.060인 반면, 여성은 -0.230으로 성별에 따라 큰 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 제약 7경로의 경제적 지지가 진로 장벽 하위 요인 중 미래 불안에 미치는 영향을 살펴보면 남성은 표준화 계수가 0.
한편 자아존중감은 학교 밖 청소년의 진로 장벽의 모든 하위 요인에 유의한 부적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 자아존중감이 높은 청소년은 모든 일에 활동적이고 성공적인 사회 활동을 한다[13]는 선행연구 결과와도 일치하는 결론으로 자아존중감의 중요성을 시사하는 결론이라 할 수 있다. 둘째, 부모 애착(정서적 지지, 경제적 지지)이 학교 밖 청소년의 진로 장벽에 미치는 영향에서 자아존중감의 매개효과를 살핀 결과, 정서적 지지와 미래 불안 간의 경로, 정서적 지지와 경제적 어려움 간의 경로에서 자아존중감의 유의한 매개효과를 확인하였다. 이런 결과는 부모의 정서적 지지가 학교 밖 청소년의 자아존중감에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 높아진 자아존중감이 이들이 진로 과정에서 부딪힐 수 있는 미래에 대한 불안이나 경제적 어려움을 낮추는 역할을 할 수 있어 자아존중감 형성에 영향을 미치는 부모의 정서적 지지의 중요성을 시사하는 결론이라 할 수 있다.
이런 결과는 부모의 정서적 지지가 학교 밖 청소년의 자아존중감에 긍정적 영향을 미치고 높아진 자아존중감이 이들이 진로 과정에서 부딪힐 수 있는 미래에 대한 불안이나 경제적 어려움을 낮추는 역할을 할 수 있어 자아존중감 형성에 영향을 미치는 부모의 정서적 지지의 중요성을 시사하는 결론이라 할 수 있다. 셋째, 부모의 경제적 지지와 모든 진로 장벽(정보 부족, 미래 불안, 경제적 어려움) 간의 영향 관계에서 성별에 따른 차이가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 이들 모든 경로에서 남성보다는 여성에게 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타나 학교 밖 청소년의 진로 장벽 해소를 위해 성별에 따른 차이를 고려해야 함을 시사하는 결론이라 할 수 있다.

후속연구

본 연구는 학교 밖 청소년의 진로 장벽의 감소가 부모의 정서적 지지에서 비롯되는 자아존중감에 영향을 받는다는 점을 밝힘으로써 선행연구의 한계점을 극복하고자 했다는 의의를 찾을 수 있다. 그러나 재학 중인 청소년에 비해 학교 밖 청소년이 처한 특수한 상황에서 오는 사회적 낙인감이나 이로 인한 우울 등 학교 밖 청소년의 다양한 심리적 요인에 대한 고려가 없다는 점이 본 연구의 한계점으로 추후 연구에서는 학교 밖 청소년에게 영향을 미칠 수 있는 다양한 환경적, 개인적 요인들을 포함한 연구의 진행으로 학교 밖 청소년을 위한 실질적인 진로 정책 마련이 필요할 것이다.
