In this study, using ARToolkit, an augmented reality is produced to meet the demand of design needed for the U-space which is a new concept of fusion and communication. The methodologies used in the study are; firstly, a protype of an augmented reality was produced using ARToolKit, where the gap between an actual reality and a virtual reality looks subtle. Secondly, a 3-D simulation based on a survey about an augmented reality was tested. The survey was done in two ways; in terms of general recognition, and focused on the prototype produced by this study. An augmented reality produced by a monitor system is more approachable but can't seem to produce high level of immersion. As the 3-D simulation based on an augmented reality turns out better than the existing 3-D simulation in terms of sense of realness, easy operation, sensational effectiveness, 3-D sensation, optical solidity, further research of it should be encouraged. Thirdly, the 3-D simulation based on an augmented reality is also better than the existing 3-D simulation in terms of interactive sensation, especially touching sensation, and therefore further study on it would be necessary. Fourthly, the method for 3-D design simulation based on an augmented reality is not diversified or consolidated enough and therefore various efforts should be made for improvement. In conclusion, the 3-D design simulation based on an augmented reality faces with some practical problems; the capacity of PC used for simulation, the resolution and illumination of can-era, high cost of HMD which is a special display device to increase the level of immersion, feedback support for touching sensation and the problem of practical application. Compared to existing design processes, the 3-D design, simulation based on an augmented reality is superior in terms of time and cost effectiveness, versatility, easy adjustment and most importantly, high level of sense of realness.
