This research analysed Korean college students" usage of two major Internet search portals, namely, the world"s number one, Google, and Korea"s number one, Naver. The college students were chosen as subjects because they were more likely to use both Naver and Google. They were asked to evaluate different aspects of the respective search engines such as search capability and site uniqueness. The results show that Korean college students overwhelmingly chose Naver over Google in terms of usage hours and number of portal sponsored personal accounts such as email and blogs. There were marked differences in usage and search; while Naver was most popular for such things as news and knowledge-community service, searches being primarily for current news, sports, academic items and general information, Google was used primarily for image searches, email usage and for searching academic references items. The two search engines were evaluated for information offering, customer service, search speed and relevancy. Naver was rated higher on all the categories but one, information offering. Still, in this all important, critical aspect of a search engines as information provider, Naver scored lower than Google in in-depth information, relevant information, breadth of information, and accuracy of information but higher on latest news and trends. The results point to the fact that although Naver is used extensively by students for games and entertainment and other related services, it and other local portal sites have a long way to go in establishing themselves as providers of relevant, trustworthy, in-depth information to Internet users.
