This study aims to understand the make-up experiences of middle school girls. In order to do it, individual interviews were conducted. A total of 11 participants were asked about what it was like to put on make-up and purchase on cosmetics, and meaning of make-up in everyday life. Four themes were identified through interview text analysis. First, the participants got pleasure out of the time they spend with their peers while exercising make-up and shopping on cosmetics. And the cosmetics were played as a medium for their friendship. Secondly, on the one hand, the participants tried to differentiate themselves from those who did not put on make-up or were not interested in it at all. On the other hand, they also tried to differentiate themselves from those who put on too much make-up. They called the former as model students as a negative term, and the latter as a slut. In this way, they tended to justify their makeup behavior as ‘appropriate’ make-up for the students. Thirdly, they imitated celebrities shown through the media, and consumed exclusive product for teens. These brand consciousness, the brand for us, reinforced their group identities as consumers. Lastly, the participants actively consumed self-management discourse while they degraded the woman those who did not put on makeup, or were not interested in their own appearance. However, they criticized those men who did appearance management at the same time. It showed that the participants were imbued with typical gender ideology in our society. This study discussed various issues to implicate, such as identities of students and adolescents, autonomous adolescent consumers and their unique culture, contradictory perspective on adolescents, discipline of body and so on.
