The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of self-based exercise education for breast cancer resection patients. The twenty-two subjects voluntarily participated in this study. The subjects were divided into the exercise group, and control group. They had conventional therapies in the hospital, but the exercise group had education for 4-weeks home-based exerccise. Physical therapist who have many experiences conducted affected side of shoulder active range of motion (AROM), passive range of motion (PROM), lymphedema circumference on subjects’ wrist and elbow apart from 10㎝ proximal area. Also visual analogue scale (VAS) were assessed by subjects. After 4-weeks home-based exercise, the study results of twenty-two subjects are below. First, there was significant improvements extension (t=-2.472, p=.033) on AROM, and flexion (t=-2.654, p=.024), internal rotation (t=-4.303, p=.002) on PROM in the exercise group. Second, there was significant reductions on wrist circumference (t=3.183, p=0.10), elbow circumference (t=4.143, p=0.02). Third, there was significant reductions on VAS index (Z=-2.226, p=0.26)in the exercise group. Through the results of this study, we found that there is significant results in the exercise group. Therefore, the home-based exercise for breast cancer resection patients would be a novel intervention to increase shoulder AROM, PROM, and to decrease circumference of wrist, elbow area VAS scale could be decreasing by home-based exercise.
