Sustainability, a new paradigm for management, emphasizes corporations’ responsibility in the society and harmony in the ecosystem, as well as economic efficiency. The role of a firm as a member of society is materialized through the concept of corporate social responsibility. This study attempts to derive implications to develop sustainability management or corporate social responsibility. It pursues evaluating firms’ performances in social activity and showing that social activity is strategic action to increase firm value. By doing so, it can contribute to expanding the awareness for social responsibility. As the proxy for social performance, this paper uses Korea Economic Justice Index(KEJI). Because it is the oldest ethical management index, its validity seems to be examined most intensively. Financial performance is measured by either the return on assets, an accounting measure, or the stock price return, a market measure. We constructed a sample of 1,238 observations of listed Korean companies during 2003-2009. The result supports that, as the financial performance of a firm is higher, the overall social performance improves. In turn, the overall social performance positively affects accounting profit. But the social performance does not positively affect stock price return. Thus, we conclude that firm’s financial ability increases overall social activity, but the latter does not necessarily increase the former. In summary, corporate social activity appears to contribute to the financial performance. It is will be more heavily emphasized with the announcement of ISO (Organization for Internal Standard) 26000. There arises a need to stimulate public recognition of social responsibility and establish relevant infrastructure and law/institution in Korea.
