The technology of Korean traditional celadons is examined by analysing macroscopic, compositional and microstructural characteristics of celadon sherds collected directly from important kiln sites. Kangjin was active throughout the entire celadon history and produced high quality even from very beginning. Such a high quality achieved at the beginning stage through the extensive use of saggars and good control over the firing atmosphere raises the possibility that the celadon technology was introduced into Korea from China through trade activities. The higher aluminum contents and different microscopic features in the earlier pieces might indicate a significant technical innovation sometime during 10th century in this area. Many unglazed sherds are found show that celadons were first biscuit fired before being glazed. Several important kilns were active during the initial stage of celadon technology. Four levels of sherds and kiln equipments recently excavated in Sori, whose relative dates of operation are quite well established, are viewed as possible comparative guidelines to determine the age and nature of the early kilns. Wonhungni and Osari kiln sites have many similar features as the oldest level of Sori. Sherds, both glazed and unglazed, from these kiln sites are analyzed and their results are compared and discussed in connection with the question of origin of the celadon technology in Korea. Mainly by electron microprobe analysis the microstructural features of body, glaze, and inlay materials are studied. In body grains of SiO? are common and often fractured. Beside SiO?, TiO?/Al?TiO?, oxide of Ti, Al, and Fe, and zircon are the most common inclusions. Some of the glazes are very clear with few bubbles and little devitrication. White inlay is mostly triangular in shape and has much porosity. It usually has lower concentration of Fe, Ti, Mg, Ca and Na than body. Adjuining the white inlays is a glassy area clear like the glaze. Such area is quite variable in composition and has a high Ca content indicating mixing with the glaze material. The black inlays are glassy and quite variable in composition. It has much crystals like anorthite, plagioclase and spinel.
