Since paleoparasitological researches had been done on the samples such as the mummy and old tombs of Joseon Dynasty in Korea, this study was performed to discover the parasite eggs from various archeological remains prior to Joseon Dynasty. In addition, the undiscovered eggs, suspected to be prevalent in the past, were searched by PCR method. Fourteen areas for sample collection were selected in conjunction with Institute of Cultural Heritage, including the archaeological remains of bronze age, Baek-Je, and Joseon Dynasty. More than 10 samples were collected from each remains. First of all, parasite eggs of Ascaris, Trichuris, Clonorchis, Pygidiopsis summa were discovered from the hole of Dusireokgol remains located at Gatap-ri, Buyeo-gun, made in 5-6th century, confirming that the hole had been used as a toilet. This discovery is meaningful as the oldest toilet of Korea, since the former oldest toilet, Wanggung-ri, Iksan, was made during the 7th century. In addition, the parasite eggs were also recovered from the remains of Gua-ri, Buyeo-gun. The eggs of Ascaris, Trichuris, Clonorchis were recovered from one hole, and eggs of Ascaris and Trichuris were recovered from another, suggesting the usage of them. These structures were made during 6-7th century, older than those of Wanggung-ri. The remains of bronze age and Poong-Nab Mud Castle, the presumptive Capital of Baek-Je Kingdom, did not revealed the parasitic eggs, and it was the same in the mud tomb of Baek-Je era. However, the parasite eggs were recovered from the remains of Joseon Dynasty. The presumptive wooden rice chest of Cheongjin-dong was suggested as a toilet due to the discovery of many parasite eggs. This discovery is meaningful since most eggs of Joseon Dynasty were recovered from the ancient tombs, providing the information on the Jeseon toilet. Meanwhile, PCR examination revealed the parasite eggs. Among the 64 samples collected from present and earlier studies, the egg of Taenia sp. was discovered from the ancient tomb of Gungju-gun. The presence of Taenia sp. was confirmed by microscopic examination. This is the first discovery of Taenia sp. from the ancient remains in Korea. However, the evidence of hookworm and Enterobius was not discovered in this study, and continuous studies on this are needed. From these results, paleoparasitological mapping could be made on Chungnam and Seoul, and nationwide paleoparasitological mapping will be possible with the wide-scope investigation on other areas.
