Purpose&contents
- This project will do research on biorobotics inspired by insects or animals. The objective is to obtain specific knowledge and technology of intelligent biorobotics, which will provide added value in the robot industry. While doing research and experiments on robotics motivated by animal behavior, this will also make new hypotheses or give answers to the existing hypotheses in behavioral neuroscience.
- The scope of this research will include the following three categories. First, space perception and navigation methods. Second, technolgy using visual information. Third, tactile perception and fusion of all technology developed in this research. The ultimate goal is to develop algorithms which can be applied to robots for cleaning, military defence or search and rescue tasks.
Result
- We applied the algorithm which was motivated from the desert ant into a mobile robot and tested the performance. The navigation method which used images were upgraded by using a sector based image matching method that made the algorithm's performance better. A landmark based distance estimation navigation algorithm was developed based on insects and animals visual sensing structure.
- The pattern of the electric field when a weakly electric fish bended its tail was analyized, and have shown that this pattern could give additional information for prey capture. Also, instead of just one object localization, a multi object localization method was developed based on relative slope. Reducing electric field noise algorithm was developed and was tested.
- Vibration source localization based on desert scorpions was developed, and its performance has been tested.
- A robot which mimicked the features of a real fiddler crab was made, and an efficient gait control algorithm was developed based on optical flow.
- Using a CPG neural model, we have found an explaintion why a six legged insect would walk in a tripod way, using three legs as one pair, by using a GA algorithm. We did simulations to support our hypothesis and applied it to a robot.
- A localization method based on a bat model using ultrasonic has been developed. The performance was evaluated based on simulations.
- A navigation method using rodent's place cells was developed and was combined with the path integration method giving a better navigation performance.
- A spherical mirror attacted to an omni directional camera was made to make a disparity map and also has obtained a patent.
Expected Contribution
- While analyizing the patterns of insects and animals, we have developed algorithms and sensors with/for space perception, navigation, visual perception and tactile perception. Each technology can be applied military or search and rescue tasks. For example, the navigation skills used by desert ants and other insects or animals can be applied to robots in situations like war or in disaster areas (where visual cues are insufficient or numerous obstacles exist) so that te robots may return home safely. And if the electric fish's object detection inspired method be more developed in order to by applied to robots, it will allow the robots to find objects using electric fields, even in deep seas or extremely polluted water where visual cues are scarse. Mimicking the mechanism of the desert scorpion to estimate the vibration source using eight legs, this could be applied to find or detect enemies' movements.
