Despite overall stagnation in the retailing industry, the mobile shopping sector has shown a rapid growth in recent years. Consumers these days can enjoy seamless flow of shopping service thanks to the introduction of mobile shopping, and it presents the emergence of omni-channel distribution. This study aims to explore the ways of utilizing mobile shopping and omni-channel distribution for vitalizing the retailing industry and promoting sound industrial ecology, and also attempts to draw institutional measures to support the sector.
For this purpose, this study surveyed consumers and retailing firms, and analyzed some foreign cases. Firstly, by surveying consumers, we explored the current state of mobile shopping experience and examined the influence of omni-channel distribution on consumer satisfaction and intention to re-use of the distribution channel. For this survey, 300 consumers returned their responses. Secondly, we performed a survey on retailing firms to investigate the current state of the introduction and operation of mobile shopping by retailing firms and to explore the antecedent factors for the introduction of omni-channel distribution. About 120 retailing firms participated in our firm survey. Thirdly, we analyzed some cases of global players such as Wallmart, Amazon.com, Bestbuy, and Macy’s to examine the strategies for introducing omni-channel distribution and the changes in the performance after the introduction.
The result from consumer survey shows that the influence of mobile shopping has increased across all the stages of consumers’ purchasing decision process. In addition, the trend of using multichannel, which meaning that consumers utilize two or more channels of distribution in their purchasing process for one shopping, was intensifying. Moreover, it is an irony that off-line stores attracted more interest due to the spread of mobile shopping. Our analysis shows both the trend of showerrooming shopping-buying online after touching or seeing offline, and the trend of reverse showerrooming shopping-buying offline after searching online.
In order to examine the impact of omni-channel distribution on customer satisfaction and repurchase intention, we attempted to identify the construct of omni-channel by employing principal component analysis. We found that the components of omni-channel were ‘integrated customer information management’, ‘integrated customer order system’, ‘consistent shopping experience’, ‘integrated marketing execution’, ‘perceived risks’. Then we analyzed the impact of the components on customers’ satisfaction and repurchase intention. The result showed that the impact of ‘integrated customer information management’ and ‘integrated customer order system’ were significant.
According to the result of the firms survey, lack of skilled personnel was the biggest source of difficulty for the introduction and operation of mobile shopping. The firms that had not adopted mobile shopping responded that the lack of initial investment was the main barrier for entering the mobile shopping market. Regarding policy support, firms wanted technical support and human resources support. We employed regression analysis to identify the antecedent factors for the introduction of omni-channel distribution on the basis of transaction cost theory and resource based view. The result was that transaction cost of retailing firms did not have impact on omnichannel whilst the resources retained by firms did. More specifically, financial resources, customer relationship, and partner relationship were associated with omni-channel building. To the contrary, marketing quality showed a negative effect on omni-channel. Moreover, firms with multiple number of offline stores had negative effect. This implies that having both online and offline channels together is more conducive to omni-channel rather than having multiple number of offline stores.
Lastly, we analyzed some cases of foreign firms that adopted omnichannel including Wallmart, Amazon.com, BestBuy, and Macy’s. In all the cases, there were revenue increases after the adoption of omni-channel. All these firms established online channels and offline channels at the same time for moving into omni-channel.They employed systems for integrating on- and off-lines such as integrated delivery systems, integrated employee incentive systems, and integrated order systems, and expanded network by strategic partnership.
