4. Research Results
This report introduced the current status of Korea and the UK regarding: first, software education curriculums; second, teaching materials for software education; and third, projects to support software education in schools. This report also presents comments based on comparative analysis.
Looking into the first point on software education curriculums: both countries have included software education into the national curriculum based on the common understanding that human society is now in a new software-oriented digital era. However, there was a difference between the two countries in their motives for the introduction or reinforcement of software education which included coding education in the national curriculum. The UK emphasized the importance of developing human resources actively through the national curriculum in order to meet the need for IT talent by 2020 based on economic forecasts. On the other hand, Korea viewed software education as a way to promote basic knowledge, or literacy, in a comprehensive manner, rather than as vocational training. This was because the national curriculum is for all students in the country. Despite the difference in the motives for the revision of the national curriculum, the two countries commonly emphasized the acquisition of information literacy and the development of computational thinking ability. In terms of official subject name used in the national curriculum, this education was referred to as ‘Information’ in Korea and as ‘Computing’ in the UK. Even though the subject name was different, it could be said that both countries placed stress on the importance of computational processing, aiming at the same concept. In particular, it was worthy of notice that both countries were considering computational thinking as one of the core capabilities that students must have.
Regarding the second point on teaching materials for software education: the main issues that both Korea and the UK commonly confronted were the development of new textbooks. Since the software education to be introduced in the new revised curriculum should be significantly different from existing computer textbooks, new textbooks and teaching materials as well as an overall change of teacher training programs were required. However, the two countries had different approaches to the development of their textbooks. In Korea, the textbook for each class is pre-approved by the government. The government process for publishing textbooks is very strict by raw. However, in the UK, the textbook selection and even the choice of using a textbook at all were made solely by the teacher. The UK government was not involved in that process at all, and, like general books, textbooks were published by publishers without any screening process by the government. Therefore, textbooks in the UK were relatively thick and expensive compared to ones used in Korea. Also, in order to facilitate on-demand, real-time support for teaching and learning as needed based on the ever-changing nature of software education, the two countries were working to develop online materials through online education mediums to be used in conjunction with the textbooks.
Looking at the last point, projects to support software education in schools: both Korea and the UK have prepared and executed various methods for providing support with respect to the new curriculums in order to strengthen software education. However, as the education systems in the two countries and their targets for teacher training were quite different from each other, there was a slight difference in the approach for the support. In Korea, the 2015 Revised National Curriculum will become gradually effective from 2018 on. Thus there is a three-year margin to prepare for the application of the curriculum into the field. However, the UK enforced the new curriculum after only one year from its announcement. Therefore, the period for preparation was relatively short and as a result various methods have been continuously developed in response to feedback from the field. In short, Korea has been working on minimizing confusion and providing standardized education in the field while applying the new curriculum, while the UK has been focusing on allowing autonomy and developing various methods of education in the field.
